Support group meeting...Coffee blocks absorption!!

Good point.  Most of these studies have been performed on people who are already on the edge of anemia (and usually are menstruating women), and are obtaining whatever iron they do get from dietary sources, and often not the best dietary sources.  In that kind of environment, concurrent coffee or tea intake can have a large effect on iron absorption; enough to push them over the edge. Compare this with compliant post-op RNY or DS patients who are vigilant about taking their iron supplements.  OK, maybe drinking coffee at the same time as your iron pills might have a small effect on its absorption, but you'll still probably get most of the benefit, especially if you take vitamin C at the same time, and also focus on "heme iron" found in red meat. /Steve
