Wilderness Eating (Noisy Newbie)
Hey guys,
Does anyone have experience canoe trekking or backpacking after surgery? One of my big goals for next summer is to do a 7-10 day canoe trek with my kids and their Boy Scout troop. I've been active in Scouts with them since they were little, but have had to pass on everything but car camping because I use a CPAP machine. By next summer, I should have lost more than enough to ditch the snorkel and go into the wilderness. It's especially important to me because my older son is going to be 20 next year, and the younger will be 17. They want to do this trip and I want to spend time with them before they run off and have lives of their own.
Anyway. Most backpacking food is heavy on carbs and high in volume. I was just wondering if anyone else had tried something like this.
Thanks,

It's VERY extreme, but I met a guy who has backpacked all over the world using only powdered protein drinks, powdered greens, vitamin/mineral supps. and a water filter He does this because he has severe food allergies, but has never let it curb his wanderlust.
Why am I saying this? Whatever you want to do, it's possible.

My bet is that you'll be doing so much walking that it doesn't really matter what you eat, you won't gain any weight. I took a 14 day backpacking trip when I was about 15 years old and in boy scouts. I lost a few pounds, but our scoutmaster who was about the age I am now lost about twenty. I say go for it and don't worry much about the quality of your intake. Ten days off the reservation ain't gonna make you or break you.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
I'm 14 months out from surgery and I have been kayak treking for the last five months. My longest was a six day 127 mile trek in the central California delta/rivers. And I am the tender age of 61. I don't hike very far because of bad knees, but I can walk with my dog most mornings for three miles.
There is alot of packable food that is high in protein. Read the lables.
