Should WLS be open to all who need it??
I guess I'll respond as the token Canadian.
It's interesting to read your takes on health care down there.
For me, I applied for coverage from OHIP (Ontario Health Care) and was approved. Now, I am able to get the procedure done in the US because it is faster, and there are more doctors, so I'm fully covered for that.
I feel no guilt that it's on the taxpayer dollar because since I was 18 I paid taxes. I've paid for countless people to have countless procedures, and I will continue to do so for many years to come.
The difference is now I won't be using the health care system to treat all of the side effects from being obese.
I imagine my taxes aren't much more higher than yours.
I find the very subject heading of "Should WLS be open to everyone" is a no brainer. Yes, it should be. It seems the US has a real way of classifying people's worthiness based on who they are, what their background is, etc.
We're all people, we all breathe, love, laugh, cry, and got here the same way... by dropping through a vagina.

Hey Brian...
I saw this come across last night...and waited till the morning to take a swing at it...
My answer is no...Not everyone deserves it...not everyone needs it....not eveyone is prepared for it...
If you just put a blanket stamp out there...that we are going to cover it...then people flock to it...
I was helping out with a meeting the other day...and a chick came in...really big girl...she lit up a cig....we told her no this was a no smoking zone...she starting gong she was bi-polar and that she would have a melt down if she was not able to smoke then,,,,we adjorned the meeting....some shrink had already signed off on her approvial....
My heart if heavy when I see people suffering form MO...and joyous when a friend like SJBob has success....
Even people with far less mental complications can not focus enough to use this tool....even when they are self pay....
I think there should be some type of personal investment...heart mind soul...not just lip service...this is what I have always wanted...is the persons ambiton to return back to society...
The government issue is a big one....as soon as they get there fingers in it...people get rubber stamped through, and the docs get paid...knees and hips on a 90 yo happen hourly...and that is a great disserivce to the patient...
wow were could debate this for weeks...great topic...Nice to see that we talked abou thtis without personally slamming each other...

I think we lost sight of the original question here. Here was the post.
If a man or woman could benifit from the procedure and they follow the basic requirements such as phys. evaluation, lose the necessary pounds for the making the liver smaller, supervised diet for a few months.
This implies they have made the necessary effort. Nobody rubber stamping people through here. This would be a strictly controlled procedure. If people are willing do all that then I think it should be covered and paid for.

I personally believe in national health insurance. There is absolutely no reason that everyone in the US shouldn't have standard care provided for them. Right now, we spend the most on health care out of any industrialized nation, and we consitantly rank the lowest on the charts for health and longevity for those same nations. It's insane to think that cubans in a 3rd world country can get better care then 9-11 worker/survivor (yes thats from michael moores Sicko).
Should everyone be allowed to have WLS? Sure if they are mentally able to handle it, and can follow the regime, absolutely. For the life of me I can't understand why insurance companies fight so hard not to pay for WLS,yes the surgery itself is expensive (mine cost about 130K), but if I developed diabetes, or heart issues as a result of obesity (both ran in my family), I could have gone through that easily with a long hospital stay in cardiac ICU. Now because I am not only thin, but fit, I will not develop diabetes, and my risk for developing heart issues statistically very very very low .
