Pain and almost 4 Weeks Out

Hey Guys,

I had my RNY on 07.16.2007 and things have been going great. Early on I of course had a considerable amount of pain, but for the most part it has been reduced to hurting when I bend. It tends to hurt a little more on the left than the right.

Last week was my first full week back to work and while I have a desk job that isn't all that taxing on my stomach, other than having to lean forward in the chair to type, by the end of the week I was exhausted and starting feeling pain on both the lower left and right abdominal areas.  This weekend it has gradually started hurting more and more on the left side in situation where I seem to be using the muscles more. This includes just walking if it causes my stomach to shake.

Was this the case with anyone else? There doesn't seem to be any tightness or firmness in the area so I don't think I am leaking. I also don't have a fever. Could this just be the muscles making the two incisions on the left side hurt.

Also while I was feeling for firmness I hit a spot that shot my pain meter over 10.

I guess what I am looking for is whether or not I am missing something?

Thanks,
Ryan L.

Hey Ryan,

Pain at that level requires an immediate trip to the doc imo. Prior to WLS, I, like most men, was reluctant to go to the doctor to have things checked out. NO MORE.....my new motto is "if in doubt, have the doc check it out." I don't want to turn into a hypochondriac but WLS is serious and complicated business.

By the way, I had discomfort and some pain post-WLS but certainly not at a level 10.

Hey man,

Thanks for the response. I hear what you are saying on the pre-surgery days. I put myself in a pretty bad situation with a case of cellulitis where I almost had to reschedule my RNY because I didn't report the pain and swelling. I ended up spending about two weeks in the hospital on IV anti-biotics trying to clear it up before my surgeon would agree to performing the procedure.

Good Times!

I spoke with my doctor's office and they are saying that almost like clockwork people start complaining of "phantom" pains in and around the left side as this was the most "used" incision.

I will keep you updated.

Thanks again,

Ryan L.
