That wasn't me that posted about the bike above.
I did, however, for my 40th birthday, get a Giant Rincon. It's a little spendy (about $500 for the 2009 model that I have), but it's sturdy, easy to ride either off or on pavement, and Giant has good warranty.
Personally, my philosophy is: Whatever gets you off your ass.
You can go the road route if you're looking for all out speed / distance. Or get a hybrid if you're using it to commute and want something comfortable to ride. Or, like in my case, mountain, if you're going to eventually get crazy off-road. (I was always one of those kids that would go screaming through the woods stump-jumping. Ruined a couple road bikes in my time because they're not designed for off-roading)
Make sure you get a comfortable seat on it.
