You are not alone.  You just have to tough it out and follow your post surgery diet.

Find something else to occupy your time.  Take a walk, clean, whatever is in the realm of your physical capabilities.  Soon you will not feel the mental urge anymore.  And after that, one of the best parts of this surgery is you never really feel hungry for a long period of time.  That "missing" feeling is a great relief.

Good luck

Doc,
I'm almost 4 months out and the "head hunger" has been a constant battle for me lately. I find that always sipping water flavored with crystal light or something similar helps. Also I like to nibble on soy nuts, they provide the crunch that is satisfying, 1 oz is 11 gm protein, so I fill a shot glass with them and eat them 1 at a time. I found that when I don't get in enough protein the head hunger really sets in. The head hunger has been my worst demon both as a pre-op and now as a post-op. But I WILL NOT let it win.

Man, I hear ya.
Most of us got to where we finally had to go the bypass rout because of emotional eating. Food was the drug of choice -- when depressed, when happy, when lonely, etc. I'd grab a heaping plate and sit in front of the TV and go into a food trance.
It's addictive.
It is tough to break the mental cycle. But in my case, I found just changing location and activity would help. Literally, turn the tube off and take a long walk, or listen to music, read a book outside on the porch.
This is especially effective while you have the RNY tool to physically keep you from turning to overeating. I suspect that's the idea -- you establish new patterns to deal with the emotions, and by trhe time the RNY tool eases off about 9-12 months out, you've got it whipped.
But just like recovering alcoholics and drug addicts, you have to remain vigilant and monitor yourself to prevent relapses.
Man, if I can do it, anyone can.
Hang in there. It gets better.

My experience is that the early post-op period when the restriction is tightest is a can't miss opportunity to retrain the mind in to new habits. But there are certainly times when there's no other way to do it other than to tell that whiny ass little boy that's always lived in your head telling you what he wants to eat, to shut the **** up. But I was pretty amazed that at 2-3 months out I was satisfied, thriving, and even happy on a diet that would've driven me crazy pre-op. And I don't have any explanation for it other than the tool allows you to create new habits. At this point, I'm 9 months out and have kinda slidden out of some of those habits and I need to get my ass back in to gear and have a series of serious talks with the little whiny ass boy in my head. (he never goes away). I was on the road this wknd and had a sausage biscuit for breafast, a club sandwich with potato salad for lunch, and a double cheeseburger for supper. Not exactly a recipe for finishing the journey.
