i am in the same boat as you, next appt with the DR. we will be setting a date for surgery. NUT has me on a 2500 working down to 2000 at the next apt. What i have done is research what i will be able to and unable to eat after surgery, and tried to bring that into my diet so it is not as much of a shock. I know we are all have/had different preps before, but this seems to be working for me, as alot of people have asked if i have been losing weight.

I may have you beat, OP. I never tried to diet prior to my RNY pre-op. I tried to exercize, I tried to moderate, but I never followed a diet or counted calories. Ever. Not once. Not for a day. Why try? I knew there wasn't a chance in Hell. What changed pre-op (on the 1000 cal diet)? Fear. Absolute fear of open-RNY or dying on the table and an almost absolute fear and conviction that this was my one "shot" at a healthy and hopefully longer life. I had reached the point where sex was gone, booze was gone, swimming, skiing, basketball, hiking, most travel, uhhuhhh...well, most everything enjoyable was gone except motorcycling and it was severely hampered. All I could do was eat and buddy...that ain't good enough.
In fact, I had given up on living. Hate to say it aloud but I was just waiting to die and the docs were pretty adamant in that special way they have that it wouldn't be a long wait. Although I am among the slowest post-surgery losers here on the mens board, and I know I have to have word-class low will-power, I have managed to lose 68-70 pounds (including 28 pre-op), lower my triglicyrides, stop snoring (I think), lower my cholesterol 50 pins, lower my insulin from 270 to 25 units a day, lower my BP to 110/68, lose 6 inches in my waist, I'm riding better than I have in years (I ride stupid fast), I can walk across the parking lot without needing cardiac paddles and I truly suck at this weight loss thang. Just think, if you just somewhat suck at this you can expect even better results.
As to the willpower issue I am doing well. I do pretty good with my pouch as an ever present ever helpful reminder. I haven't strayed into any un-authorized areas and although exercize in the traditional sense is not my forte, I am waaaay more active during the day, move a lot more and at a far greater rate. I expect basketball, hiking and other enjoyable past-times are just around the corner.
Hold your nose and jump. I did and it's working out O.K.. We don't have to be perfect.
