Coffee/Caffeine...

Can anyone explain to me why we aren't supposed to drink regular coffee? Is it because of the caffeine that we could possibly get readdicted to or something else like acid, etc? I'm confused but I would love to know the reason why I'm torturing myself because I LOVE COFFEE. And now that school is underway, I'd really prefer some hot joe in the mornings but haven't yet because I was apparently told not to drink coffee. Thanks!

I'm enjoying a cup as I respond to your post.  I never gave it up, never intended to give it up, and will not give it up unless it causes some sort of physical pain.  I happen to be a coffee geek with an espresso machine, burr grinder, and the accessories.  I usually make caps and latte's using nonfat milk.  I am not suggesting that you substitute my judgment for your doctor's or your own.  Good luck in your search for answers.

I drink around 3 - 6 cups in the morning and at least a couple in the afternoon.   Talk to your doc and ask him when you can drink it again.   Long term it's not an issue.  Short term it may hinder your weight loss because it 'allegedly' make you hungry.   Who knows.   I think it's BS and a myth.

I was told to do decaf the first few months. I guess the caffine hurts the healing process. But as they were drinking their Starbucks they said but we can't tell you to give it up. I've been drinking mostly decaf but do drink reg. I've not noticed any prob. Power of suggestion I'm going to grab a cup now! C'ya

The one thing I have heard is that it may block absorption.  Don't go hog wild to begin with.  I would coat my pouch with milk before the coffee, just to protect the insides.  Most surgeons want to see no coffee for 6 months to 1 year for the healing process  to fully take place.  Just me.  Brian  PS This may sound wierd, but I believe there can be a transfer addiction from food to coffee post WLS.  It can become our "comfort food".  Just keep your head about you on this one.

Jane Brody, the former health/nutrition columnist for the NY Times, had a great column on coffee and caffeine in the Times a few weeks ago which touched on most of the various anti-coffee bugaboos we hear repeated to us now that we've had WLS.

Sorting out Coffee's Contradictions

Its effects on calcium absorption seems to be completely attenuated by the addition of a little milk or cream to your coffee, so it obviously can't be too great.

Hey Lance..

Damn boy, you are getting tiny...

Ok on to the coffee..

I drink a lot of coffee...and I would wager mondy, if someone tried to take Dave's coffee away...there would be more turmoil in Japan, than if gozilla showed back up....

Haha. Not tiny enough! I'm watching Will and Grace (tv sitcom if you're unfamiliar) and Jack is trying to get Karen's cousin Barry in shape to be able to get a date since he just came out of the closet and while Barry is doing push-ups on the floor Jack says, "Remember Barry, no pecs, no sex." haha I thought it was hilarious. But it made me think that I want to be fit and trim to increase my sex appeal and whatnot. And I used to be a serious coffee-aholic but slacked off because of my pending surgery. It isn't that big of a deal I don't suppose, but I would love to drink it occasionally. Thanks!
