Cutting calories, Not Exercise, Plays Bigger Role In Maintaining Weight Loss

Experts report that it’s clear that exercise combined with a low energy density diet is the best approach for weight loss and overall good health. But many people report finding time to exercise is a major obstacle. It’s encouraging to report that weight loss can be maintained primarily through a low calorie diet.

That's no excuse to refrain from exercising but the point of the matter is controlling your caloric intake is more important in losing then maintaining your weight loss than is exercise. Bottom line: to be healthy, you need to do both. Here are some fun facts regarding calories"
1 calorie =
the amount of energy (heat) required to increase the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius (1.8 degrees Fahrenheit).

There are 3500 calories for each pound of body fat. To lose one pound of stored fat, technically you would need to burn 3500 extra calories.

A typical male athlete (which obviously excludes athlete-extraordinaire Michael Phelps) typically consumes upwards of 7000 calories a day!

Fidgeting can burn 350 calories a day.

The 2007 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest Champion, Joey Chestnut, ate 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes. In that amount of time he consumed approximately 20,394 calories (1 hot dog = 309 calories).Takeru Kobayashi, 6-time defending champion and placing 2nd in 2007, ate 53 3/4 hot dogs - about 16,609 calories.

You burn more calories sleeping than you do watching TV.

A few of the highest calorie fast food items can be found at Baskin Robbins:

  • Chocolate Oreo Shake, large = 2360 calories
  • Heath Bar Crunch Shake, large = 2160 calories
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Shake, large = 2160 calories

Boner,

Interesting stuff. There has been a lot of research that supports low energy density dieting. People can eat mushrooms and other foods that are high bulk, low calorie to keep them full and keep their metabolism going.

One diet the Dx recommended for my overweight non-op friends is the high fiber diet which says that 35 grams a day is enough for weight loss (not sure if there are any other conditions).

You know my favorite. The Okara (soybean pulp). It's had most of its soy chemicals extracted so no fidoestrogens (woof!).

Best Wishes,

Dave
