starting to ride again/ what do you ride?

After 20+ years I have started riding my bike again. Not far mind you but on saturday I took my 50 dollar craigs list schwinn moutian bike for a ride. In my mind I thought I would be able to ride for miles but lets just say my body set that straight. after about 3/4 of the way through a half mile ride I had to stop and take a break, pitiful I know.  I went for a ride on sunday also about a half mile was still whipped when I got done. I feel like a bum not being able to ride further but I guess we all have to start somewhere.

My bike is a Schwinn Clear Creek moutian bike 1996 era. It was like new condation when I bought it. the only thing I am going change is the seat, I need a bigger seat so I dont have to have the seat surgically removed from my ass when I get done riding.

PS

on a side note when you see a post on this board by sunshine1001 it is most likely me having a brain fart and not signing my wife out and signing in as me before I start posting.

Mornin' Bill

We all have to start slow before we can do any 50 mile rides.  I'm still doing pretty short rides myself.   The important thing is you are out there riding again.

Sounds like you got a great buy on the Schwinn.  I bought a Raleigh Venture (comfort bike) with a bog ole padded seat for my big ole arse.  You can pick up a good seat pretty cheap at most any bike shop.  It'll definitely help.   I'd like to find one that is about 20 inches wide and 6 inches thick, but haven't found one yet.

Enjoy the rides.

Let me know when you find that seat, in the mean time I will check out the bike shop for a better seat.

I ride one of these:

http://ransbikes.com/Fusion07.htm

Funny looking bike that is a hybrid between a regular comfort bike and a recumbent bike. Very comfortable. You more lean on the seat then sit on it. I've had it for a couple of years now, and was riding before my surgery as well. Since the surgery I've done a couple of moderate length rides (15-20 miles) but it is harder now then prior to surgery. Hopefully this will change soon.

I strongly recommend these bikes to anyone who wants to ride a lot, wants to be comfortable doing it, but doesn't intend on riding in races or endurance rides.

That's a pretty cool looking bike... I wonder what the weight limit is tho, as it looks like it would be easy to bend that seat bar with any weight.

I'll bet everyone thinks ya built a custom cruiser.. LOL.. just put chain bars and  a lil extra chrome for bling, and tell em you built it

Hey Sunshine oops I mean Mr. Bill, I know what you mean about having great expectations and coming up short. First week 1 mile kicked my azz! Stuck with it and progressed. Hang in there it will get better and is worth it. C'ya Bob

I think the weight limit on the Rans bikes is, I think, 300 lbs. When I bought it, I thought that was where I was. However, when I finally got fed up about a year later and had my first appointment I weighed 333. But the bike seems to have handled it fine. No cracks or stress points. Now I should be okay on it.

What's good about it is you're upright, hands relaxed. Butt never hurts, no neck strain, hands don't go numb. What's bad about it is, it is expensive. I think I paid $900.

Bob, I'll put it to you this way...right now she is built more for comfort than for speed.  I'm hoping that her RNY 4 weeks ago will fix some of that!
