Valuable Words on Vitamins
I found this and asked to reprint with permission from Andrea U. These are especially important the farther out you go
1) Calcium carbonate (the calcium in TUMS, VIACTIVE, OPTISOURCE, and CALTRATE to name a very limited few) is not acceptable for RNY, DS, Fobi, or VSG patients. Period. Carbonate requires stomach acid in order to be absorbed.. we don't have any, thus it's wasted money. Carbonate will give you kidney stones before it will help with your bones.
2) RNY patients *need* 1500-2000mg per day of additional supplemenation to the food we consume from elemental calcium. Not all calciums are created equal, and labeling practices are not always honest or fair (such as with UpcalD). For your own benefit, make sure you are getting enough calcium -- yes, I know, it takes 8 citrical petites to hit the minimum on the range.
3) Flintstone vitamins, in of themselves, are not adequate supplementation. They may be enough in an entire supplementation program (extra iron, calcium, b-12, etc.), but by themselves are not adequate to protect your body.
Yes, I know, people don't want to hear these truths. It sucks when preconceptions (especially those based off medical opinions) get blown out of the water. Hell, I don't want you to simply follow me, either. Do your research.. do not take your doc's word as gospel. Don't take *my* word as gospel. Be your own advocate, because honestly, noone else has as much of a vested interest in your health as you do.
My words here: Your surgeon is just that A surgeon. He cuts for a living. He may have done hundreds or even thousands of these sugeries but he is not an expert in vitamins and nutrients. Somtimes it's like asking a mechanic to fix a bicycle. They can do it but aren't really trained. Go to people who have lived and worked this. I use vitalady. com and experienced men on this site for information. My doctor even learns from me as he has never had a gastric bypass patient before

OK, that helps with what not to buy..but im not to bright...I need someone to hold my hand alittle to get me started and say...Go buy this or that. Im sure next month when I have my 8 hour pre op class they will tell me more about what to take after the sugery, but untill then I guess I will just kinda wing it.. Thanks for the heads up on the calcium carbonate..
Go to www.vitalady.com for a start. I have found them to be invaluable when it comes to what you need. You don't necesarily have to get it there but they have a chewable iron, Tender Iron. I called them today n told them what was going on n they faxed me an invoice that showed what i needed. For me that works because now i know what vitamins I need n how much. Andrea has also posted what she takes but i think as men we need more. I will send you the list tomorrow as i left it at work ok
Sorry guys. I didn't go in tonight. Last night on the way home I noticed my legs were getting numb from the knees down n I was woozy n light headed. Nauseous cranky irritable - even more than usual. The numbness is a sign that I am definite more down on protein n vitamin deficiency. I could hardly sleep. Got in to see the doc n it took them 6 tries to get 1 vial of blood. I was dehydrated. I did get a B12 shot but felt crappy all day. I went n bought some liquid B n liquid iron n zinc lozenges to hold me over till i can get the order. My zinc is below level at 57. So I too a sick day. They thought the world had fallen in because I never call in sick.
I now have a referral to a bariatric center because the PCP feels he is out of his league. Will seee how ins handles because we have exclusions about weight loss. I can see the battle coming.
Tomorrow for sure. Sorry
