1st appointment. Sleep test...
I went to my first scheduled appointment today and I was glad to get it done. Now the doc wants me to have a sleep test done. My roommate is getting lapband at the same time that I am getting RNY, and he needs a sleep test as well. Has anyone else done the sleep test? What should I expect, and how long does it take? My roomie is paying out of pocket, and asked me to see if anyone had an idea of a place he could go "on the cheap"?
Also I didn't get put on a liquid diet yet and my roomie did. Does everyone get put on a liquid diet, or only those over a BMI of 60?
Right now they are submitting my paperwork to insurance (medicaid), and they said I should be approved in under 3 weeks.

SP, Had the sleep test twice, you prepare for bed they hook you up to all kinds of sensors and you try and sleep. They try to make you as comfortable as possible, but their listening to you, monitoring with infra red cameras and your all wired not a peaceful nights sleep. During my 8 hour test I only slept a total of about 2 hours. No pain just couldn't wait to get home for a good shower to get the jell crap off the use to apply the sensors. C'ya Bob
I got there at 8pm. they got me all wired up and started the test around 10pm. I guess I fell asleep and cooporated by rolling on my back and they were able to document the apena by 1 or 2 am. They then started me on CPAP to determine what level of pressure I needed to not stop breathing. They woke me up around 5 or 6 am and let me go home. I think they called this a split night study. I have to see my doc sometime this fall and will have another test to see if I still require the CPAP.
Try going to CPAP.com, they sell a lot of equipment and have a lot of patient information on the site. Based upon your study your Physician will order the equipment (when you have the study make sure they use a humidifier, so you will get a machine with humidifcation at home, they are much easier to tolerate).
Good luck
any other questions, drop me a message.

I have been on a CPAP for 5 years and since my weight loss I have been experiencing too much pressure with my machine. My mouth would be sealed shut or the pressure would block my ears. I had a follow-up sleep test to check out my progress. I forgot how much of a pain in the rear a sleep test could be. They hooked me up with endless leads and monitor belts, microphones, etc. and they had me sleep without the CPAP to start. I didn't think I had slept much at all when they woke me up at 2:00 AM to put me on the CPAP. Apparently, I didn't experience any apnea until I was in REM sleep. From 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM they incrementally increased my pressure until they found the correct level at 12. My old machine was set at 15. I'm pleased that my pressure will be reduced and I'm glad I went for a follow-up sleep study instead of thinking I didn't need my machine any more because of the weight loss. I certainly did not feel rested the next morning and the bed was so uncomfortable. You would think they would make the bed comfortable during the sleep study. Enough of my venting. Bottom line, I'm glad I did a follow-up study. It was the right thing to do.
