Does this sounds like too much

Hello fellow losers.  I am 8 days post op and feeling great.  I am still on full liquids and pureed food, with my whey shakes and all I am getting in around 65 grams of protein, but at the same time I get in around 700 calories.  My questions are... is that too many calories and how can I get in more protein without raising my calorie intake?  I do not get full with liquids, and today being the first day on pureeds, I was able to eat egg salad with 2 eggs and almost ate it all till I stopped myself, but did not feel full.

I too, was surprised by how much I could eat following the surgery.  I was easily eating a cup of food when it was supposed to be 1/2 or a 1/4 cup.  I called my NUT (suggest you do that too) and we talked about hunger and whether or not I was really feeling hungry.  I still struggle with really identifying when I have had enough since I have been used to bing eating.  I cut back my food intake and stick between 500-700 calaries a day 4 weeks out.  I really am not hungry and now is the time for us to take advantage of our ability to be satisfied on little.

Hope that helps.

Sounds like you are doing well, but I would be concerned that your portions are too big at this point.  Your pouch has no feeling yet so you won't know if you are full or uncomfortable or over-stuffed.  Everything in your system is red and swollen.  It has to heal slowly.  Eat very small portions using small plates and bowls and even the baby utensils.  it really does work.  Eat a little.  Wait.  Sip a little.  Wait.  Eat again if you want.  Make sure you drink your shakes at this stage.  it is the only way for you to insure your protein intake.  it can't come from food at this point because you can't possibly/shoyldn't eat enough protein rich foods.

Do the best you can and enjoy the initial weightloss.

Feel good.

Yeah, 90% of my protein comes from the whey protein shakes I make twice a day.  My shakes end up being like 9oz?  is that too big?  In those 9oz there is 29 grams of protein.

Hey Jay,

I averaged around 750 calories per day for the first six months. If you're only getting in 65 grams of protein for 700 calories, sounds like you'd better find a new protein supplement. For example, Nectar by Syntrax has 25 grams of protein and only 120 calories. It's fruit-flavored so you can mix it with water and it tastes like lemonaid, etc.

Use the old 10-1 formula for determining if something is a good protein/calorie food. If calories are greater than 10X the protein grams, nix it. For example, for you 700 / 65 is greater than 10 () while the Nectar (120 /25) is less than 5 ().

Hope this helps.

what i look for in my protein supplements and foods are 20 grams of protein for 100-120 calories.
Good choices:
GNC 100% Whey protein
Can of Tuna fish
3-4oz non breaded fish filiet - taliapia, ocean perch

I would try slowing down when you eat too. I think you might be eating n drinking a lil too fast.n so your body doesn't get the signal its full.  slow down when you drink your shakes too. they also might be too thin. try using less water

good luck.

My WLS Team advised me to worry about getting in my protein 65-85g min. and 75oz of liquid, of course at the beginning liquid and protein will come from the same source and don't worry about the calories or carbs. I followed their guidlines and was at goal weight in under 4 months. C'ya Bob

What size meals are y'all eating? I'm 2 and 1/2 months out and dinner tonight was 3 oz chicken breast (pressure cooked), 4-5 tablespoons of pasta sauce (very lo-cal, lo-sugar 45 cals in 1/2 a cup), an oz of non-fat mozzarella, and about 5 forkfuls of cottage cheese. About 250 calories.

Lunch was the inside of a steak taco. Maybe 3 oz's total of beans and meat. (140 at most)

Breakfast was a protein shake (120 cal protein, 1/2 cup strawberries, about 4oz skim milk = about 210)

So far about 600. I'll probably have another 1/2 shake with extra strawberries (150) and get to 750. I usually get 700. Now, I can eat lots more but I don't. I'm lucky . I guess. I can eat lots of things on the list without trouble most days. Maybe I'd be losing more if I was like a buddy of mine who could only eat a spoonful at this point. He was losing 2 to 3 times the weight I am but had constant health problems. I don't think I'd trade but maybe I'm doing this wrong if 2-3 ozs is the standard.

My nut is one of those "don't count anything but protein and water, the pouch will restrict your quantities". Uhhhhh....not really. My proteins shakes are full tumblers.

slowolgguy, Sounds perfect to me! Just make sure your getting in as much liquid (waters best) that as in conventional diets helps in the weight lost process. Also any exercise will help. Good Job! C'ya Bob
