Big Shoulders 5K Swim
I swam a 5 K race on lake michigan yesterday. My goal was to finish and that I did however with a time of 1:48:15 my time was pretty pitiful. I finished 37 our of 43 in the wetsuit category.
I guess I should be happy with the accomplishment of completing the race but I was disapointed that I finished so close to the bottom of the heap.
Well now I know that I can cover the swim distance involved if I ever decide to do an ironman.

That's a long swim. Completing it is no easy task. Congrats.
Your speed will be very much related to your typical training swim. My experience from longer triathlons is, if your event is 3-5K, you need a long slow 3K swim at least once every couple of weeks. Watch the shoulders though. You may need to alternate with backstroke during the training swims, which makes it more strenuous, but eliminates some of the repetitive stress from the forward reach. The two combined are a great core workout as well.

Congrats, Jon. For me, finishing was what it was all about as I tackled my early cycling challenges. Once I knew I could finish, the challenge became "faster and longer." Bet you wouldn't have dreamed you could finish a 5K swim a year ago, huh?
Keep up the great work and again, congrats on a job well done.
