Falling Off track

Thanks for posting this because this is a reminder and a wake up call that WLS is not the easy way out.  I too have to work at it very hard to control my weight.

How do I stay focused? I exercise, exercise, exercise!!!! I do it about 6 times a week and will change my routine.  I lost all my weight and past my goal.  I'm still below my goal but would like to lose about 5-8 lbs.  It's been very hard to lose these pounds so I'm going to try LIPO-6. I asked my surgeon about it and he said it should be fine but to ensure that I watch how I feel and take it from there.  I told you already about this and will let you know how I do.

The other thing I do is I do weigh myself every week to ensure I'm on track. I prepare my meals to take to work to eat, and drink lots of water.  I never drink and eat at the same time...That's my big thing....I do not want to stretch anything inside and mess things up.

Continue to touch basis with me and you and I can work together on this because I want to lose a few more pounds.  Hit me up on myspace and lets check in with each other.....

so I'm going to try LIPO-6.

Really bad idea.  First of all, like most weight-loss "supplements" that are sold (thanks to Sen. Orrin Hatch's evisceration of the FDA's regulatory powers), it's a witch's brew of untested, potentially dangerous agents.  Basically, to invent yet another weight-loss "supplement", just do a MEDLINE search of various substances that have shown some promise in cell cultures or laboratory animals, produce a pill that contains them (so long as they're found in herbs, so it can be called a "dietary supplement" rather than a drug), and start a multi-level marketing campaign aimed at desperate individuals.

LIPO-6 used to contain ephedrine (which arguably has some research behind its use for weight loss), but since that's been banned, it's been reformulated.  It now contains synephrine (from bitter orange), forskolin (from Coleus forskolii), and yohimbine (from yohimbe bark).  All of these are half-assed attempts to achieve some of the same stimulant effects of amphetamine and ephedrine, but with agents of unproven efficiacy and safety.  If this were labelled as a drug, it would require years of studies to show that it's both effective and safe, but because it's sold as a "dietary supplement", there's no need to show that it's either safe or effective.  Lucky you.

If LIPO-6 works at all in enhancing weight loss (and that's a big IF), you can expect the usual complement of sympathetic nervous system side effects: high blood pressure, insomnia, nervousness, sweating: in other words, some of your old co-morbidities in a pill.  Furthermore, like any "diet pill", it only "works" for as long as you continue to take it (and usually this stuff "poops out" well before you stop taking it.)  Eventually you're going to tire of the side effects OR the cost of this junk, and the 5-10 pounds that it might possibly have helped you lose are just going to come back on (and more) with a vengeance.

It's a bad idea to try any sort of a diet pill, but if you insist on it and your surgeon is so gung-ho (I really can't believe that!), why not ask him to put his prescription pad where his mouth is, and prescribe you something that at least has been shown to work for a few months, such as phentermine?  Or stock up on some Depends and buy some OTC Alli (the lipase inhibitor); both or these have been tested for safety and efficacy.

I'm glad you're addressing this issue here, bro. I can't add any helpful advice to what these experts have already given, but I will say that I'm starting to see the same struggle and you're not alone. This summer, from about July 4 until about August 20th, I took a second job working in the oilfield. When you work 15-16 hours a day in the 100 degree heat with Fire Retardent Clothing on, you can eat pretty much what you want to when you get home at night, and still lose weight. And I did. I lost13 lbs in those 6 wks. The problem was, when I quit and went back to my 9 hour a day sedentary "real" job, I had relapsed back in to some of the habits that got me to 450 in the first place. I've been kicking and spurring myself for the last month or so to get my mind right and get back on track. There's no shortcut and no easy way out. We still have to take control of that spoilt little boy who lives inside our head and tell him to shut the **** up when he starts whining.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

Cripes, Fish, I saw your new avatar, didn't notice your name, and thought it was someone else!  Great progress!

First off hello all! It's been a while since I posted on the mens board.

I've lost 202 pounds in less then 14 months, but I am falling of the track. For the pass month I've just haven't been the same. I would eat a lot more and feel so good that I lost so much weight that I say to myself "their is no way I would ever be big again". Well I have gain 8 pounds and now it's getting scary. You see the thing is I have no restriction like I use to. I can eat a whole lot, really fast, not feel full and even drink while I'm eating. I keep saying "I'm going to go back on a diet tomorrow" but never do it. Anybody else gain weight after a year post op. If so what did you do to bring yourself back on track? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's very hard man.....I can't diet for ****a small rebound is common although not an absolute necessity. I generally tend to flux 7- 8 lbs from my lowest weight to my highest (in range) perhaps it's too early to panic?????

good luck to you.
