A hit and run post from Tuna Town
My Sig Ot was 379 pounds-- lost down to 315 the day of surgery in April. He's now 5 months out, and weighs 259---verrrrry slow loss for a man. At five months out, he's down 56 pounds.
I was a slow loser too (also lost a lot pre-op) but as a guy, I think he is exceptionally slow.
He's taking in about 1100 calories a day-- balanced 40% protein/30% fat/30% carbs. He's pretty active and is just now starting to work out again- his energy was very low, and he just moved which took a lot of his time and energy. He's very tired all the time, sleeps poorly, still uses his CPAP (and needs to) and takes blood pressure meds. He's 42. He does supplement well-- including 1600 mg Calcium Citrate, B-12, a multi, a B complex. he's very compliant.
Any ideas? Anyone else lose this slowly and catch up later? Think he needs to up his intake? (Keep in mind, he has a sedentary job.)

Up the protein, drop the carbs, Get some decent vitamins in him. You don't say how much B12 supplement so he might want to up that. I think it will help the energy level.
Also look at measurements is he losing inches? As fat turns to muscle it can seem like a stall.
Is he doing shakes or using food? My thought is that it is the carbs slowing the weight loss myself but that is me.
Also make sure he is getting a lot of water in - not juices tea or pop
I have noticed now that I have cut down carbs I have more energy
But he's already eating over 110g of protein a day, (more than 40% of his intake and more than the nutritionist suggests, actually) and less than a 30% of his diet is carbs-- and they're all balanced-- whole grains, fruits and vegetables-- no pasta, bread or potatoes. I also mentioned that he is taking very good supplementation-- I see to that as a woman who malabsorbs several different things herself, unfortunately. His B-12 tests very very high already-- he takes 1000mcg daily--if he adds to it he's just going to pass it through his urine.
Also-- it's not possible for fat to "turn into muscle." Muscle turns into larger muscle, but again, he's not working out so that's unlikely.
Thanks though!

I agree on the walking-- but this week he's half dead (I went through that too last winter for a couple weeks-- sometimes you just aren't getting enough energy to move, it seems.) Thanks for the ideas.

Does he really need 110 grams of protein a day? I'm lucky to get in 75 grams if I'm lucky. After a certain point, all that protein is just metabolized for its calories. (I don't know at what point that is, of course!)

But the better answer is "Since it worked for Jupiter, I'm tryin' it!" I eat that many too, but you know that. At some point I might get a tad more carby, but at the moment, I'm holding steady and watching the data. The protein does keep us sated longer, but probably does account for the lack of energy and most certainly is responsible for us pooing bricks.

I haven't "caught up"; when I look at my tracker, it's more or less linear; I didn't have a steep fall-off right after surgery, and I don't think it's slowed up much recently. Of course, you know that I've been *****ing about being a "slow loser" all along, but I always ascribed that to being old (52) and short (5'3"). Nonetheless, these slow losses do accumulate. All of a sudden I'm 115# lighter than I was last year at this time!
Other strange similaries with your sigot: I'm also still using my CPAP and also still taking HBP meds (and needing every milligram!); thank God I wasn't diabetic; I'd probably still be shooting up insulin.
I just discovered today that my RBCs, Hct and Hgb are borderline-ish low; these labs all took a steep drop after my hip surgery and its blood loss, so I've been taking iron _pretty_ regularly since then (when I find the time between all the calcium I choke down). I'm going to need to pay more attention to the iron now that I've seen my labs. Frankly, I don't feel tired at all, but how's your SO's iron these days?
