The crank is finally here
I ordered a shorter crank for my bike. For those that don't know, the length of the crank arm has a diret effect on how comfortable it is to ride. Most stock bikes come with a 170mm crank which is way too long for somone of my height, but that is standard because thats just what they have always used.
As I peddle, my rising leg has to push up against and lift my stomach, which not only hurts, it wears me out in short order, almost like tripling my effort. Take four inches off the rotation and Voila' no more sore knees, and hopefully many, many more miles.
I'll let you all know how much of a difference it makes

I'm taking for granted this is on a road bike ?
What brand do ya ride ? I ride a cannondale Synapse and love it . It carried me across Iowa for Ragbrai . I WILL DO THATAGAIN NEXT YEAR!
I use a 165 mm not a whole lota of diff to look at it but all the diff in the world if your riding it . It sounds like you know what I mean though !
Best wishes and happy riding with your crank ,hope that helps .

Hey Nick,
You're really getting off on this cycling stuff, aren't you?
I'll be doing Moab again in March so maybe we can hook up there. They've move it back a couple of weeks so it's not so cold and it's now 3 days instead of 4.
My buddy and I put together a list of the top 5 rides which we "suffered" the most. The top 2 on our list were the day 2 Skinny Tire rides up to Dead Horse Canyon.
Two years ago, I got hypothermia at the park and barely made it back to Moab. Last year, the wind chill was single digits and we had wind gusts up to 70mph and, again, barely made it back to Moab. Didn't help we got off the route, got lost and put in an extra 20 miles to get back on track. Both years, we rode in snow flurries.
I now look back at the rides with a feeling of accomplishment but during the ride, I was feeling anything but. Had to dig deep to say the least.
Keep on spinning, Nick!!

Yes indeed Boner, I'm even thinking of getting a new tatoo in honner of my new passion .(biking ) I want it on my calf. It will look some thing like the mark one would get from their front chain ring . The spokes of the chain ring will have my daughters names and DOB in it , the center hub will have the wifes zodiac sign. I'm using her zodiac sign because her name is Gay , and I dont want to send the wrong signal if ya know what I mean! The outter ring will have my grandson's name and DOB above his mothers name.

A guy I work with has bicycle chain tats on his arm and ankle. Got to admit they're pretty cool although if I was going to get a tat, it would be one of a foosball man. I used to be a professional foosball player back in my "lost years". Or I think I used to be one if you catch my drift.
Although I haven't played in a number of years, aabout a month ago, I ended up playing against the current Colorado foos champ at a bar. He had a big frickin' foosball player tat on his forearm.......now that was cool although I would go for something a tad more discrete.
By the way, he kicked my ass but I was able to frustrate him and actually had him down early on in the match. Not bad for being out of competitive foosball for frickin' 25 years.

So wait a minute...you're saying if I ordered a longer crank, I could go farther? hmmmmmm... maybe I'll surprise my wife for our anniversary.
on the "serious" side...I too have a lovely Cannodale, looks really good as it sits there in my garage mocking me. Maybe someday I'll have to pull it back out and toss my leg over again! soon.

Yes indeedy Padre. Studies have indicated the size of your crank directly impacts your overall performance. These same studies have indicated that a longer crank is preferable for most.
By the way Padre, do you know why so many women have problems estimating distance and measurements? It's because men have lied to them their entire life how long 6 inches actually is.
