Post Op Calorie Recommendations
Good afternoon all,
I'm three weeks post-op and my doc has moved me to soft foods as tolerated. So far, I've only found a couple of "careful" indications and feel pretty lucky to be able to eat pretty much what I'd like. I was curious as to other people's nutritionists recommendations as to calorie counts at this stage and the mix of carbs, fats and protein. I have my dietary guides from my group but I'm curious since a lot of docs seem to have differing recommendations for other things.
Thanx,
Jim

Early on I think your volume of intake is more important than calorie intake. That will change, but my doc and nut said try to keep servings to 1/4 cup or less. They wanted 65g of protein, which is pretty freaking hard only having 3/4 cup of food each day.
Now it's not an issue, but I am able to eat quite a bit more than 1/4 cup.

The first time you do something - It's going to be a personal record!
My doctor never gave me any limitations whatsoever. He was more of an "eat what you can tolerate when you can tolerate it" type. And "eat as much as you can cause you can't eat much". Well I started tracking my calories at about 6 wks and by gosh I was eating 1400+ calories per day. So I trimmed it back to about 900 per day from that point up until about 3 months. At 5-6 months out I was back up to about 1400 per day. But there were days when I went 2000+. I quit tracking over the summer and haven't gotten back into the habit yet.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.
Doctors and Nuts don't give calorie recomendations because they don't want you counting calories. They want you counting protien and water. Don't get ahead of yourself, just do as your team says. When you see your NUT he/she will ask what you eat in a normal day and then calculate the calories if you need a change they will tell you. They try to keep it as simple as possible for us.

I was started out at about 3 ounces a meal for 3 meals a day. I was told to make sure I got in at least 60 grams of protein. They had me slowly increase each meal to about 6 ounces each. I was never really pushed to count calories. I do still track my protein intake and as a side effect see I am consuming about 1000 calories a day, protein is around 80 to 100 grams a day. I am not sure what my carb intake is, I get my carbs from dairy, fruits and veggies.
