Any Asthmatics out there?

My goals go beyond just losing weight.  I want to be trim and fit - in good physical form.  I want to take up new hobbies that require a good fitness regimen.  I want stamina for things like running, hiking, biking, swimming, etc.

My issue is that I have really bad asthma.  I know that it will improve some when i drop the 960 sticks of butter off my body but I also am aware that it will still be a problem.

In high school I was able to weight lift for a few hours a day and I saw great success in that.  The ability to set goals and achieve them over and over again in my classes was intoxicating.  But I was unable to run or do any aerobic exercises.  I want to be able to run a mile, something I was never able to do in my life even as a child.  My average mile 'run' is like 20 mins simply because the running part in the beginning caused sucha problem with my asthma that the rest was slow walking - i can walk a mile faster than try and run one.

If you have experienced anything similar to this and have found success in getting past it I would greatly appreciate hearing how you were able to succeed.

thanks
Dan

I feel for you. I don't have asthma thank the lord. I can see how it would make a rough road even tougher. My advise is just focus on walking. 45 minutes at a time if your able. Summer is almost over here, and the mornings are almost pleasant. Get a pedometer. I shoot for 10000 steps a day, haven't made it yet, but I did hit 6500 once.
Do you hunt? Quil opens in the morning, go out and trip over some rattle snakes and jumping cactus. It's a great way to start the day. I'm sooooo dead tomorrow.

Ah Hunting - this is one of my new hobbies I want to take up...

I have a pedometer, Scottsdale Bariatric gave me one.  I usually average 5200 steps a day.  I hit 6615 one day.

For me it is feeling like a bird that can't fly.  I want so much to just be carefree.  I even have chronic year round allergies - bermuda grass is bad for me among hundreds of other things, so playing outdoor sports sucks too.

I can only tell you about my experience - your mileage may vary, of course.

When I went into surgery, I was on Advair twice a day, and probably hit the albuterol once or twice a day.  In 2001 I came within a hair of dying from an asthma attack, saved only by some doctors who were very skilled with an intubator.

Immediately after surgery, I stopped the Advair.  I don't know why, but I just did not feel like I needed it any more.  The albuterol use dropped off a lot too.

2.5 years after surgery, I am still Advair-free, and I only use the inhaler once or twice a month.  And, the inhaler use is for the most minor wheeze that I would have completely igonored in the old days.  I exercise all the time - long hikes in the woods, racquetball, etc.

Good luck with your surgery!
