Returning to work - how soon?
So I have 25 days till I have lap RNY.
My job is pretty sedentary as an IT Manager. Based on your experiences how soon would I be able to return to work? I was hoping to get back to work after a week as I used all my time off and then some when I cracked my head open on Memorial Day Weekend.
Thanks
Dan

I went back to work after 12 days (including weekends). I had no problems going back except for the loss of stamina. For the first couple of weeks back to work I was exhausted by lunch. A week might be pushing it, but if there are no complications, tiredness/exhaustion will probably be the worst part of going back that soon. By the way, I'm a lab technician, so i don't have a physically demanding job either.
Thanks for a few quick replies - I just read the post from yesterday discussing a similar question. I am afraid that I am the kind of person that will go back to work even if I a not ready. I always put myself after my family. I currently work 50 hour work weeks and I do side jobs and my free time on weekends is spent fixing up the house right now. I can't financially afford even the one week off work - I will probably even work from home that week and remote into to the servers and support end users just to get a few hours logged.
Has anyone had an experience where they pushed themselves to hard and had negative consequences from it?

Hey Dan,
I work in Finance and have a desk job too. I am having open RNY and I know the recovery time is a little longer than lap proceedure. My plan was to be awol for the first week. Work from home the 2nd week and then work 1/2 days the 3rd wee****il I can build my strength/stamina up to a full day. I too have used up all my vaca-PTO time.

Dan,
I am scheduled for my RNY on 10/9/08. I am in the same boat as you and have young kids (boy 2.5 and twin girls 7 mo). I will be working from home for the first couple of weeks after and when I go back will depend on the side effects (read up and out) from the surgery. My manager is very supportive and has no problem with me working from home during this time.
I had this same question and most people said it varies and that each individual needs to listen to their body.
Send me an IM before your surgery and I will let you know how things panned out for me.

Hi Dan,
I took two months off. Actually, I had taken a total of three years off, but I went back to work two months after WLS.
I was fortunate. I had myself in a possition that I really didn't need to work. I had been self employed for the previous 15 years and had saved up for a rainy day, and boy did it rain.
Went back to work to end the boredom.
But none of that helps you.
I could have gone back to work in a week, but toke it easy to allow my body time to heal. Listen to your body, it will tell you when you can start being more active. DON'T pu**** to hard to start with. The world will still keep spinning.
One day resting is worth about 4 days recovering while working.
Good luck, I'm pullin' for ya!
