Plastics Surgery Perspective - Please Share

Alright, all of you experienced RNY postop/old timers out there.  I would really like to get the perspective of some guys who have had the Panniculectomy or Tummy Tuck as some people would like to call it.  If you don't mind sharing or sending me to something you have posted before I would truly appreciate it.  I am at the beginning stages of this process and hope to get this done in the middle of December.  My RNY surgeon thinks I am more than ready to get this done, I have lost about 150 pounds now and have stayed pretty stable weight wise - give or take 5 pounds.  I have looked at the plastics forum and it is very limited with information.  I have seen the procedure in videos from doing research, but what I want to know is how long it took some of you to recuperate, how did things go for you personally, would you do it again, how long was it before you could go back to work - let me clarify - how long before you could get around without too much difficulty and then how long before you could start exercising hard again = how long was it before you were back to normal again like before you had plastics surgery?

It wasn't too long ago that I was looking at getting the RNY procedure for weightloss and now I am on the cusp of getting plastic surgery done to forever cut away the last remaining image of my former self.  I really feel like I need this to complete my journey.  Now mind you - some of this is vanity - I want that fantastic look from head to toe when standing naked and I also want this because to be honest with you, that fold of skin hurts and is a pain in the ass when I work out and do lots of running or biking for extended time.

My weightloss journey has been incredible and the mere fact that I am now looking into plastics just blows my mind.  It is utterly amazing what RNY surgery has done for my life mentally, physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually.

Thanks for any input or testimonial anyone can share.

Hey Taz,

Good to hear from you.  I hope you get a few answers but I know guys like GoTo and other old timers have info to share.

Good luck to you and hope all is well.

Good to see you post Guy.  I have kept up with you and your weightloss by viewing your graph on your blog.  It seems you and I are on about the same page as far as the amount of weight we have lost.  Keep up the good work you are doing.

Hey Taz.

I had plastic surgery after my weight had stabilized for 1 full year which put me 2 years post-WLS date. I had the abdominoplasty (aka tummy tuck) and I also had a panniculectomy which removes the skin in the pubic area. The plastic surgeon had to do each procedure twice since there was so much skin. She waited for six weeks between the two rounds of surgeries to allow for healing.

By week 5 following each surgery, I rode a 100 mile bike ride if that gives you any idea of my recuperation. She approved each ride prior to me completing it as my healing process from PS was very similar to WLS. The pain post-PS was higher for me since WLS was laproscopic and PS is getting cut hip to hip and then some.

I would do it again in a heartbeat. After losing nearly 300 pounds, I had a massive amount of excess skin. I was getting constant rashes and sores from my bike riding which all went away after the PS. I still have some excess skin since PS is an art and not a science but overall, I'm happy with the results.

Insurance paid for the bulk of the PS because of the rashes but I had to battle with the insurance company to get it covered.

Hope this helps somewhat.

Taz,
I had my panniculectomy about 3-1/2 years ago.
I was up and going in about 3 weeks.
The swelling lasted way beyond what I was expecting.
(About 6 months)
Other than that, it was a breeze for me.
I resisted having it done for quite awhile,
But have been very pleased with the results.
One thought to consider----
I did shop around for a plastic surgeon who had done
The exact surgery on Men.
So many of the plastic surgeons are used to doing
Boob jobs and lifts for women.
A few of the Docs I met with had only done a couple of
Tummy tucks on men.
I found a surgeon who had done panniculectomies
On 6 men in the last 2 months.
That’s what sold me on that doc.

I have also seen folks who swear by PS post-op pain management
using “On-Q.”
http://www.vqorthocare.com/Products/Miscellaneous/Pain_Pumps/On-Q.php My pain was minimal and I got by on just some typical
Narcotics from the doc.

(Just a thought)
There are quite a few guys with PS experience over at Quix…
http://quixoticwls.org/forums/index.php The Men’s Only Forum there is ‘invite only,’ (Drama Free) so if you drop by
Give me a holler to log on to the Men’s Forum.

Congratulations on your continued success,
And may your PS be just as beneficial.

I had the surgery a week ago and going through the recovery process as you read this.  I took pain pills till Tuesday after being operate on Friday.  The only thing that hurts is when the compression garment rides up on my ass.  So far so good.

I'm not a RNYer...I'm a DSer, but I had a Lower body lift and chest reduction done in the beginning of july. Well being back to normal is much different then being back to normal activities. I'm 3 months out, and while I'm back to most of my normal activities, I am not back to normal, I still get swollen, and my incisions still hurt sometimes enought to curtail some of my activities. As far as getting back to working out, I started to work out again at 4 weeks out, but just light stuff, like walking on a tread mill. I started to seriously lift weights again about a month ago when I was cleared by my surgeon. I still can't do a direct ab work out because it pulls too much...but other then that I'm good to go.

I do want to make this comment...try to get a realistic expectation of plastics on a post bariatric body. I think that I was well prepared, but somewhere in the back of my mind, I thought maybe my skin would "snap back" more then it did. My results were great...my surgeon did a fantastic job, but my skin is not like that of a person who was never obese. It still "hangs" a bit, because while a PS can remove most of the skin, they can't remove it all..for a variety of reasons, the biggest being the fact that the skin loosens up again after they tighten it. The other major issue is blood flow. There is only so much they can remove or tighten without compromising blood flow.

Scott,

I can't point the finger that it's really AttyDallasBatswinsgsman Paul... (and now... !! )

But are you implying that he should not be the posterchild for the DS? lol

Unless DS stands for something that a little more derogatory?

Best Wishes,

Dave

I didnt' say anything about paul in my post ..did I?

But on that topic, paul is a poster child for hte DS, in the sense that he is the demented poster child of why a person should get the DS (lol sorry paul had to say it) . He doesn't want to eat right..he posts over and over again about how he indulges in sweet desserts and such, he doesn't want to exercise, he posts over and over again about how exercise doesn't help weight loss (yeah right) and he suffers from severe depression (statistically those with depression do worse with any form of WLS)...and even with all of that stacked against him, he lost over 200 lbs. and is a WLS success. Good job paul.

Talk about amazing results....so you can see even if you don't work the DS to it's fullest, it will do the work for you....lol.
