Why no Caffeine?

I could count the number of cups of coffee I drank in my life pre-op on one hand. But giving up my caffeine source (Coke) made me eventually seek out another. I waited until I was about 6 months post-op or so, but I started drinking coffee to stay alert while driving during the summer, and now it's bordering on addiction. I'm looking forward to my first cup tomorrow morning in fact.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

As far as I'm concerned, it's a non-issue.  The crap about caffeine being a diuretic is a typical old NUT's tale, taking a largely irrelevant factoid and distorting it out of all proportion when applied to post-WLS life.  Caffeine is a very mild diuretic, and people quickly develop tolerance to that effect (along with all its other effects) after a week or so.  You don't have to drink any more fluid than you would normally, and you can count caffeine-containing fluids completely.  It WON'T dehydrate you.

The only real issue is stomach/pouch irritation.  I held off about 3-4 months, but after that, tried my typical 1-2 cups in the AM, had no problem, and continued enjoying it.  If coffee and caffeine upset your stomach, then it's obviously a bad idea.

Hey,

I'm also a coffee drinker, and have been since about a couple months after surgery. I started out having trouble drinking 10 to 12 oz, now I drink a minimum of 24 oz every morning. Sometimes I have a lot more. I've never ever experinenced any trouble with my pouch. I still lost more weight than I expected to. I've been able to maintain thus far, no fear of that changing in the future. I would think that if you had trouble drinking coffee before surgery that you might be careful still. Additionally, if you start having trouble with upset stomach and such, then you should have it checked out. Its seems like common sense, because it is.
