Thanks for the input - how does one distinguish between a 'premium' whey and the not-so-good crap?

hmm I am looking at different brands online - I see one that I can get for cheap - EAS® 100% Whey Protein - does anyone know anything about this? Also do you usually blend with water or fat free milk?

I use the 100% whey protein from GNC.. the 2 lb tubs run around 29.00 ( and they will take it back if u dont like the flavor you have bought). I use the powder, water and crushed ice and its just fine.. This is the only powder i have liked, there are all kinds out there.... Sometimes i wil mix a cup of greek yougurt  with my protein powder and the ice, water gives me a nice smoothie... with about 30 grams of protein..

I like the ISOPure Zero Carb shakes from GNC. It has a malty taste that you can either mix in milk or water. Beware the milk even fat free, sugars are 12g.

Hopefully you're back on track. Can't play this waiting game. You can be hurting your chances for surgery.

ALso drink a lot of water, it will help flush

thanks for all the help guys

They want you to lose weight for 2 reasons in my opinion.

1) When you lose weight, or are in "weight loss mode", your liver shrinks, making the operation easier for the surgeon.
2) To make sure the patient at least has enough willpower to stick to the post-op eating drinking program.

That being said, I got myself in the same situation you are in now. My Dr didn't give me an "amount to lose", but he did say to eat only lean meats and green vegetables, and no sugars until surgery. At that point, the surgery wasn't going to be for at least 6 weeks. So, I naturally was havin a few "last meals", and got the call that they had an opening within 2 weeks. I panicked and called the NUT, who is on staff at my Surgeons office, and she said just start then. I did, and followed it faithfully. The weekend before surgery I had a sound gig, where I was outside in the heat 2 days in a row, and went home each night and drank HUGE amounts of water, and Clamato with added salt, I was craving salt badly. Anyway, I went to my pre-op appt. and had gained 3 pounds. I told the surgeon about the salt and water, and he just kind of shrugged like he didn't believe me, but after the surgery he said I did a great job shrinking my liver. So I know it can be done..

Dan I was sent to a weight loss Doctor prior to qualifying for WLS lost 37lbs in two weeks and this is what I was put on. Any protein bar with less then 5g sugar 15 or more protein and 200 calories (can vary a little, the same with protein drinks and lean cuisine meals. I was allowed any 6 of these through the course of the day mix and match any way I wanted trying to keep the calorie input at 1,200 or less and the protein at 90 or better. Read the labels not all Healthy Choice or Lean Cuisines are created equal. My normal day during this period was get up and drink a EAS shake (110 cal) two hours later another EAS shake (110 cal) lunch a South Beach Bar (210 cal Crispy Meal Bar) and a EAS shake (110 cal) afternoon a South Beach Bar (210 cal) and supper I had Two Lean Cuisine Dinners (200-220 each) put on one plate so I was getting the volume I was use to and then about 8 pm another EAS. If you get headaches through the day sip on bullion (chicken or beef or veg.) the sodium will help ease the headaches. The secret is to stay ahead of the hunger by eating or drinking approximately every two hours whether I wanted it or not I never got hungry. The second or third day is when you might get the headaches. If you allow yourself to get hungry then your screwed you'll eat everything in sight. This is a fast healthy way to loose weight. I bought the pre- made EAS shakes 4 for $6.00? But mixed it up any way you want just try to keep it at 1,200 cal a day and get a pedometer and try and walk 10,000 steps a day. Good Luck. Rocky Top.

I did a complete liquid nutrition diet for 3 weeks prior to my surgery just to get acclimated to how it really would be afterwards. I wound up losing around 20lbs in that time. It SUCKS to do nothing but liquids OMG it sucks but the good thing is you will have to do liquids after surgery anyway for a few weeks basically so it's good to start early. And essentially it doesn't matter how much you lose prior to surgery because all they need you to lose is about 5% of your body fat so that your liver has a chance to shrink up so when they put the retractor in they don't have to adjust it too much. You don't want them to accidentally nick your liver with the laparoscopic devices that would be bad. So lots of protein shakes like the guys have said and I had soup along with that just so I could have something a little bit solid anyway because trust me, that liquid **** will get on your last remaining nerve after 2 or 3 weeks of it. Don't forget to get your "last meals" in either!
