Two Weeks Out and Zero Energy

Hi guys, I am two weeks out of surgery and up until this weekend I had tons of energy. I was walking 2 to 3 miles a day and feeling great. This past weekend hit and my energy crashed. I get dizzy when I stand, I have not been able to walk like I was and I feel exhausted all the time.

I am still on puree foods for another week. I take a flintstones, B12, calcium citrate. I eat about 500 calories a day (6 oz of puree food) and drink 70 grams of protein in shakes.

My weight loss is in a stall (I have read that you may hit a plateau at 2 weeks so I am not concerned about that) but has anyone else felt their energy crash like I am? Will my body adjust and will this go away? I have lost 60 lbs since 2 weeks before surgery (30 lbs before adn 30 after).

Any advice is appreciated.

have you checked your blood pressure?  Sounds like it might be too low with the dizzy on standing stuff.   I experienced similar stuff and had to get off of the BP meds I was still taking.  Note:  not a diagnosis, just something to check.

Yeah, what Steve said. But your body has taken a hell of a lick. And will continue to. The hardest thing for us fat guys to learn is patience. My wife has had to tell me numerous times, "You didn't get fat over night, and you're not gonna get unfat over night." Be patient, and if all vitals are normal, you'll pull out of this one and get back to your 2-3 mile routine. And more.

Clapton,
I had a similar reaction but I wasn't up to the walking that you were pre-crash. My energy loss is easing up now that I'm 4 weeks post-op but it's still not like it was before. My doc explained it to me that for two weeks I was living on belly fat and jello. You've just had a major plumbing re-work and your current caloric intake is about a third of what it used to be. Give your body time to figure out it's not still under assault and that you're not starving. As long as the BP checks out, I'd ease into the exercize and just roll with it. From what I read from the long termers, it will get better.
Good luck,
Jim

Had the same thing early on.  BP could do it.  Also look into Protonix if your taking that...That might be doing it too.  Some guys are saying no way on the Protonix...but I stopped if for awhile and it helped with the lightheaded feeling.  Brian

Are you on any meds? If you've had a signficant weight loss at this point, then it's time for them to be adjusted.

Other then that, you are 2 weeks out of a major surgery, yes walking is good, walking 2 or 3 miles a day is probably not the best way to recover.....esp when your only eating 500 calories a day. I'd honestly cut back your walking to 1 mile maybe 2 , and if possible try to get in an extra protein shake if your going to do so much activity, you need the extra protein to heal.

Besides BP, get your sugar checked, especially if it was a problem pre-op.

You should have up front energy but no staying power behind it  (stamina) right now. It took a month to get my stamina back to pre-op levels.

I am not diabetic nor was I on any BP meds. I was not taking any meds before or after surgery. I just had my BP checked -  it was 112/72 (which is very good). When I stand up I feel like I am going to black out and I just want to sleep.

I just called my surgeon. I think we found out that the problem was dehydration. I have not been doing well at drinking my water.  I was told to go to the hospital for an IV but I talked him into letting me stay home and drink the night away. If I am not feeling better tomorrow I am to go to the hospital for an IV.

Thanks for all your advice. This forum is great!
