Low Dose asprin?

I was just wondering if any of you takes a daily low-dose asprin as a preventative?  I don't remember seeing too much about it in any posts.  Thanks.

Lou

Supposedly you can if your doc says okay and has you take a proton pump inhibitor (Prilosec is it?), which causes your body to stop making acid. Only thing that concerns me is that the US is the only place where people take aspirin as preventative medicine and it's also the only place with a huge boom in Diverticulitis which I think is, pitting of the intestines which can lead to pain, bleeding and a general world of sheeit.

I think the recommended dose is two baby aspirin, one in the morning and one in the evening, but confirm that with someone who's more knowledgeable.

Hope This Helps,

Dave

I take two baby asprins in the mornings.  One cardiologist wanted me on one regular asprin a day...but it was too much.  It was hard to do it daily.  Also I tried to do one baby in the morning and one baby in the evening.  I have so many other meds I have to take during the day that it became hard on the bowels.  So I do what I can after my second heart attack.  If you're not taking alot of other meds you may be able to take more.  I believe a European study (about 5-7 years ago) said there was effective preventative action, with one regular asprin, taking one tablet every other day.  Jury is still out on this one.  But it does thin the blood, prevents heart attacks, and helps with the severity of heart attacks.  How much...and post WLS...we are still learning.  Brian

Lou,

My Dr. has me on 1 325mg. Ecotrin per day. Haven't had any trouble with it. It is coated so it's easy on your stomach. I've been on this for at least 2 years.

Before my RNY, I had been taking a daily baby aspirin "just in case", and asked my surgeon at my final pre-op visit what his feelings were about this after the surgery.  He said that it was a "risk/benefit" analysis, and if it were deemed necessary, they'd consider it.  (I imagine that he'd probably also have recommended taking a PPI like Prilosec at the same time.)  As it turns out, my post-op blood lipids have been spectactular, so I really didn't press the question.

After my recent hip surgery, I had to take a full-dose (325mg) enteric-coated aspirin daily for 4 weeks in order to prevent developing a deep vein thrombosis.  I took it along with 40mg of Prilosec OTC, and I didn't experience any stomach/pouch problems whatsoever.

My surgeon said it is OK if it is enteric coated.  Problem is, I don't think it dissolves fast enough to be absorbed before it exits your system.
