Are you being a positive influence?
Has your newborn focus on healthy livin' been a positive influence to your kids or other family members? Looks like my example has had a positive impact especially on my teenage daughter. Over the last year and change, she's lost nearly 70 pounds and is officially no longer "overweight."
What a flippin blessing to see her healthy and exude with confidence. When I was morbidly obese, I failed to realize what a negative impact I was having on my family. Consequently, we all struggled mightily, as a family, with FAT.
When it comes to locker room farts, my daughter's weight loss has to be my biggest, stinkiest, room-clearing blast I've ever had.
How bout' you guys? How's it feel to be leading the charge towards healthy livin'? Bet you never thought it was possible, huh?

yep. we influence (positive or negative) those around us by our example more than by our words. Like Boner, I have been blessed by seeing my youngest daughter drop over 80 pounds since I had WLS. She seems to really get it about eating now - very healthy and really focused on label reading. Priceless.

Boner,
Congratulations on your daughter's changes! Since my surgery, I have seen my 11 year old son become much more conscious of what he eats and how he eats. He has learned to eat his protein first, and that it's OK to skip the fries or throw half or more of them away. He's also become much more aware of drinking his water and getting some exercise each day. He's dropped about 15 pounds thus far, and I'm so greatful to see the changes because he was headed right down the same road I had traveled. Hopefully he's now detoured onto the road towards healthy adulthood instead.
Thanks for the topic. I think being an example is one of the best things we can do.

Great job, John! I'm saddened when I reflect back and realize what a negative influence I was to my kids and now it's all about fixing the problem and "damage control." My 22 year old son is still a hold out on the healthy livin' path so I hope I can reach him before he gets too far down the path of obesity. It's a dark road, one I would wish upon no one let alone my kids.

Since joining the WLS community my family has changed a lot. My wife has lost weight, and practices the "small plate" principle. Our family as a whole eats much better. We have a home cooked meal most every night.
My mother has since has WLS and is now a size 8. It's a huge blessing, although she constantly complains that her butt hurts from sitting on hard chairs
My 5 year old son goes for protein first, and exclaims that sugar is bad for you! My 2 year old doesn't care, and goes ballistic when she sees a Pez toy.
My friendship group has also changed. We're hiking / hunting / running / climbing much more than we used to. We're even planning backpacking adventures a year in advance. We used to hang out and play games, or sit in a coffee shop eating pastries. Now we sit on a ridgeline and eat wild grapes and other things we find along the trail.
And...I've canceled my World of Warcraft account. Just don't have time for it amidst all the other things I do now. Anyone want to buy some toons? (70 priest, 70 warlock, 68 druid, 61 paladin) If you know the game, you can see just how much time I spent playing!
