i am a little over 2 months post op and I have had great results so far.

BUT here is the problem,  I am not eating alot and my wife and 2 year old son are eating supper by themselves.  Before the surgery we would always eat supper together, but now I eat a yogurt then go workout and come back and eat a protein shake.

Is this normal and if so how will this work out.  I cant eat what they are eating and I dont want to force them to change their lifestyle.

Help I dont want to lose my family, but I need to workout to lose the weight.

Shane, I spend a lot of time eating in the other room, even at the same time my family is having their dinner.  I just can't be in the same room while they are eating all the things I want and can't have.

It's a tough situation to be in, but I explained it to my wife and she is good with it.  She has been very supportive of this part.  She realizes that the cravings I have are a killer for me.

Have you considered moving your workout time.  I recently did this to get more time with my family.  I used to work out after work, which means that by the time I got home, I only had an hour or so to spend with my son before it was his bed time.  Now I get up when it's still dark out and head to the gym.  It means I have to go to bed about 3 hours earlier than I am used to, and I get up a couple hours earlier, but I am able to have that family time.

Good luck with this.  Take care of yourself and try to explain things and get buy in from your family.

Shane,

I think there are two different issues here.  You can and should sit down with your family and eat family meals together.  it is a very important part of the "family" day.  it is the debriefing time.  During that time, you can and should eat the food that is appropriate for you.  If you don't want anyone to have to do anything special, than prepare your meal yourself and enjoy the quality family time.  You have to get used to eating with the "normal" folk to survive day to day.  Use this time to learn how.

You will also be setting a great example for others to eat healthier, without saying a word.  You can exercise befor e  or after dinner or any other time.  Learning to eat correctly and being close with your family is a very important part of the process.

Regards

Lou

I totally agree with Lou.  I realized even before surgery that I would be eating different from the rest of the family, so I dealt with that in my mind.  My 2 children are out of the house, but I let my wife know after she was afraid to eat in front of me post-op that it was ok.  Last night was my son's 25 b'day, so took the family out to a Chinese place he wanted to go to.  I ordered off the menu a shrimp and veggie dish.  Of course I only had about 5 or 6 bites while they chowed down, but it was the fun of having my family together and enjoying the conversation and laughter that I concentrated on.  Don't deny yourself the blessing of being with your family and vise versa.  Eat your yogurt at the dinner table while they eat their dinner. Focus on your family, not what is being eaten.   Got to learn to deal with it, because this is a lifetime project.   Michael

shane - I'm about two months out as well and although it was difficult at first, I learned to sit with the family for dinner instead of eating in the other room.  I'm also lucky enough to have a wife that has for the most part tried to move to a healthier menu for family dinners.  Hopefully you can strike a balance with spending time with your family and not feeling deprived.
