When did it stop?

I'm about 7 1/2 months out RNY.  I weighed 299 pounds the morning of surgery down from a high of 320.  I have lost down to 207 and have been there for a little while now.  I set a goal of 200lbs for myself when I started this process.  My question is, when did you weight loss pretty much stop?  I've heard that 6 months is pretty much the benchmark for the rapid weight loss.  Mine has slowed way down since the six month mark with only about 3-4 pounds coming off since then.  I'd love to lose the last 7 pounds, but what concerns me most is regain.  How about that, when does that become a big issue to watch?

Thanks

Jason

Jason,
Sounds like your doing great . I went a whole year and am now 20 lbs below my goal weight. For me it took the whole year before I slowed down with losing the weight. I think everyone is different. I have no doubt you will reach your goal. Just continue to follow you docs orders and exercise. Congrats to you and keep up the great work!

I hit my goal weight at about 8 months post op and have plateaued since about 9 months post op. I keep bouncing around the same 3 or 4 lbs for the last 3 months.  My understanding that things start to change around 18 months post op in terms of regain, but i'm not sure on that. All I know for sure is I watch it now, just in case!

Hey Jason,

Congrats on your success to date. As your body stabilizes to a more normalized weight, the pounds become more difficult to take off thus you always hear "the last 10-20 pounds are a real *****"

It's difficult to figure out what a persons ideal or goal weight should be by using BMI figures. Lots of differing factors involved. To me, the only accurate way to determine an ideal weight for ones individual body type is by looking at body fat %. A healthy male should have somewhere between 10-15 % body fat. This weight loss deal is really all about getting healthy by losing body fat and increasing muscle mass, not just in losing pounds. A good body fat % = healthy in most cases.

Weight loss maintenance is difficult for us WLSers but if you've developed good eating and exercise habits, the task is obviously easier. If you haven't or revert back to the old bad habits, regain is inevitable.

By the way, my rapid weight loss pretty much stopped around 9 months post-WLS but I was coming down from nearly 500 pounds. Based upon what I've seen, the "WLS honeymoon" is typically 9-12 months give or take. After the honeymoon, it's all about you and your habits.
