Vitamins, supplements and drugs, Oh My.....
Good afternoon all,
I'm coming up on my 8 week out point and I'm a little concerned about nutrition. I have an appointment with my surgeon Tuesday and I want to be fully prepared. Currently, I take Centrum multi twice per day. I get most of my fluids but am very short on protein. After surgery, I found I couldn't stand even the smell of the protein used in most supplements. I'm trying protein bullets using the slam and chaser method so we'll see how that works out. I have found nothing that I couldn't eat so far but I have been pretty careful there. My biggest concern is the fact that I see guys talking about their iron levels, B12, etc and I haven't had my first set of labs done yet. Is this normal since I'm such a newbie or have I let something fall through the cracks?
Thanx,
Jim

Jim pretty normal they will do your blood work and let you know what and how much to increase in the way of vitamins, B12, Vit. D, Calcium Citrate, Iron are the most common. You might try making SF Jell-O out of the protein bullets it goes down pretty good you don't taste the protein.
Protein Jell-O take 2 42g bullets 1 small box of SF Jell-O (.3oz)
Add 1 cup of boiling water to dissolve the Jell-O then add the two bullets and 2oz of cold water, put in 1/2 cup servings makes 4 24g portions.

Thanks Bob,
I noticed that if I slam down a 45 gram bullet, I get itchy face and tend to flush almost like an allergic reaction. Since we don't use that much protein at a time, I've started splitting them into two doses. I'll try the jello recipe and see if that kills two birds with one stone.
Thanx,
Jim

What kind of protein bullet are you using? The reaction you describe sounds like you're taking an adulterated "bodybuilder's" protein bullet containing the additive "beta-alanine", a substance that causes flushing and tingling (making muscleheads imagine that their protein supplements "work".)
Generally speaking, it's not a great idea to use these clear, collagen-based protein bullets because the protein quality is extremely low. You might be obtaining the equivalent of a few grams of protein (if that) from the 45 grams of low-quality collagen. Focus on whey, milk egg or soy protein supplements if you must use these.

Just as I thought. Pro-Slam contains beta-alanine. That's the cause of your "allergic reaction".
There is no upper limit (within reason) on how much protein you can absorb at once, so put that out of your mind. However, low-quality collagen lacks essential amino acids, and in the absence of these missing amino acids, your body can't build protein of its own. You might as well have been eating 42 grams of starch or sugar, because if your body can't use the low-quality protein to build protein, it converts these unused amino acids to carbohydrates and uses them as a source of calories.

ja,
I bought the big jugs of protein powder and walmart, and mixed the powder in with soups. Any soup that had a sauce base seemed to hide it real weal. Also, light yogurts hid it well.
It was hard for me to get my protein levels in, and I still have to seriously plan it. It's easy to snack, and not get protein in. Always make sure you get it in tho, or weight loss will slow down.
Vitamins... first six months I used childrens chewable vitamins with Iron(Flintstone style)... now I use a prenatal vitamin daily. Sublingual B-12 tablets, Biotin. Biotin. Biotin.. and oh.. did I mention Biotin.. LOL. 11 months out, if I don't take Biotin, I still start losing hair, and that's bad for me.. :)
