The mental barrier?

i still find myself lazy and having to mentally convince myself I can walk from the car to the store and it won't be hard, etc.

Amen Bro. Amen. Every day for about the last 5 years prior to surgery I took the elevator to go up to the second floor where I worked. And I took the elevator to come back down. Cause it was a bunch of damned work to get 400+ lbs up and down those stairs. And my knees hurt  when I did. So now that I weigh 250 it's really pretty easy to get up and down the stairs. In fact I can take then two at a time when I need to. But.........and this is one of those huge buts........I have to force myself every stinking day to walk by that elevator and go down to the stairs. My first impulse is to get on that elevator and I have to tamp it down hard. I don't guess I'll ever get over wanting to be lazy.
The free man owns himself. He can damage himself with either eating or drinking....... If he does he is certainly a damn fool, and he might possibly be a damned soul; but if he may not, he is not a free man any more than a dog.

Great question, Scott. The key for me is signing up for various bike events well in advance and plop down the bucks. Once I've set my cycling season event-based and performance goals, I'm committed to train for them. I don't want to fail and not finish, first of all, but I also want to enjoy the actual event no matter how difficult it will be. In other words, I minimize my suffering and obviously improve my performance by training up big time throughout the year.

For example, I know I have the Skinny Tire 4 day ride in March. It's really a toughie early in the season so I know I best stay in shape over the winter or else I won't enjoy the event. Then I have the Elephant Rock century in May which is no walk in the park either. My rides get progressively tougher though out the summer.

So, if you set event-based goals whether it be a marathon, tri or cycling event, you'll be amazed how that motivates you to train. Lots of peer pressure in these events to finish, first of all, but to also perform well. The competitive juices kick in so to speak.

Hey boner, are there any national organizations I can tap into for local events? I have no idea where to begin......I've seen signs and such during the spring and summer, but honestly I've never paid much attention to them because I never did anything like that.....

I'm thinking of starting with a short bike ride or swim....running is not in my near future because of my back issues.
