Vsg & alcohol: any drinkers or ex drinkers out therer??
Hey Guys-
Anybody have any experiences with drinking alcohol after a vsg that they would like to share??
Here's where im at...... Im not trying to make myself look selfish of like an alcoholic, but here goes.
As i get older (28 not really old) i have outgrown my college years of going out and getting ****faced hammered 8 nights a week. From 23 to 28 i gradually toned it down from every night to now just one night per weekend and maybe a few beers during sunday football.
I am a socialholic, My girlfriend and I regulary have dinners, parties, football games, bbq's, etc. to either attend or to host at our place most every weekend. I used to be a sous chef and a bartender so you can imagine who does all the cooking and drink making
I can commit myself to WLS surgery based on the fact that i am willing to give up most all food in trade for everything else i want out of life, but cant have because i weigh 400lbs. And believe me its a long list of basic things that skinny people take for granted every day. Nothing special to the averege joe on my list!!!
Now i know that many of you probably dont drink anymore or maybe never drank to begin with, but this is something that i thouroughly enjoy and i dont know if i can give up? I wouldnt call it and addiction per say, but a part of my lifestyle. "Socialism"
My question to the more experienced VSGers on the boards: Can you even drink at all after a VSG??? Some posts i have read say no, not at all. Another post by a lady i read said that she had a couple of drinks just 3 days post op!!! (obviously that is not a good idea), Some say you can have a few, but nothing carbonated. But if i know myself, im gonna be jonesing to have a beer or some sort of alcoholic beverage when i get to be a month or two post op.
This is the locker room, we are men here. And damn it men drink beer!!! Watch Football!!! Eat BBQ!!! and then spend a week eating nonfat yogurt, steamed brocoli, and raw carrots to make up for the beer and bbq they consumed!
Can you have your beer and drink it too?
Thanks in advance to all that reply, and please dont trash me for having concens about this subject.

Ok i'm assuming you've passed your psych evaluation, and your not crazy.......so then it must be a case of stupidassitis that is causing you to think this way. If i remember correctly, you're going to borrow money to self pay for a WLS, only to sabbotoge yourself so that you can drink a few beers? WTF?
You're 400 lbs, if you don't want to stay 400 lbs your going to need to change your attitude, and lifestyle, esp with a restriction only surgery like the VSG. Does it mean "giving up beer forever", no, but it will mean no drinking for the first year after surgery, so you don't blow out your liver, which will be stressed out enough trying to clean all the toxins out of your system from rapid weight loss. It will mean eating low carb, low fat, and low calorie until you get to goal, and it will mean (with the VSG) maintaining a cap on your caloric intake post op.
Liquids are the fastest way to get in calories. If you want to blow your weight loss, so you can drink it up....go ahead. If you want support for that choice, don't expect it from me.
My suggestion is find a new social habit/outlet.

I am with scottie here. I still drink when I am out socially, Though I only drink water. Not a big deal all my bois understand and never say anything about it PLUS they know they have a designated driver whenever we are together. Could I have a drink? I think so nothing seem to upset my still castiron but smaller stomach, I haven't tried yet and don't me trying anytime soon.
Lets not talk about transfer addiction though it seems to be less common than most think it is still a possibility.

You can drink but you will get drunk very very easily after a VSG. Apparently there is a high risk of becoming alcoholic after WLS if you drink much at all. Here's a study from Stanford on this subject from earlier this year.

In my case I do drink sometimes but have to avoid it most of the time and I limit myself to 1 glass of wine or 1 drink. It has the same effect on me as 3 drinks have on my friends so I have to be very careful.
