Check out the navigon brand. This is what I bought after much research. It comes with free lifetime traffic update service (which would normally cost about $65 per year from other brands). If you run into traffic it reroutes you around it.
It also shows you a picture of your exit on Parkways , so you know what lane to be in to exit. Pretty cool stuff.

Buy him an atlas for $4.95 and then spend the rest of the money on something really sexy for yourself. And then post the pictures here.
