Put off.
I have decided to wait until February to have my surgery. Doc said at my BMI I am much more likely to have complications than if I lost even 20 pounds more. It seems the 60 BMI is the cut off. He also said if he gets in there and can't lift my liver out of the way he'll sew me up and put me off anyway, which could cause problems with the insurance company. I am not sure if they would agree to pay both if it came right down to it.
I will be eligible for FMLA on Feb 16th so that is the date I have set and I have to bust my @ss till then.
Am I making a mistake, or would you have waited given the same cir****tances?

Definitely wouldn't have waited. I would've done a liquid diet for the month before the surgery to lose a good bit of weight and shrink the liver and then had the surgery. As it was I went on the liquid diet 3 weeks before my surgery just in case. And everything turned out fine. They always tell us fat people that we can have clots and whatnot but so can everybody else, we are just prone to having them because of the amount of weight that is on our bodies. But anywho, do whatever you feel comfortable with, it's not worth dying over if you can just wait till February.
I don't know if I would have waited either. I've heard the whole "we'll sew you up and send you home if your liver isn't...." before too. But, truthfully, I don't know if I've seen it happen. Maybe some of our more "seasoned" guys can elaborate. Ultimately, the decision was yours to make, so good luck to you regardless.

I don't understand that at all... if I'd have had to wait until 60 BMI, I wouldn't have made it.
Thank God my doc had experience with bigger guys. I had mine at 79.9 BMI, open, with no compications except a few busted stitches resulting from my own brain fart.
I've heard of docs requiring that tho... I would have had to look for a different doc...
My life depended on it.

I think that you are doing the right thing in postponing. It's not that long a period of time, and your health is at stake. There are lots of places on the web where you can find out stories of people who did not wait and paid the price in one way or the other. Lose 20 lbs or more. Do a very strict Atkins or strict Optifast diet and you'll get there in no time. February is only two months away.
Just my opinion.

My Doctors "sew you back up" comment was not the deciding factor. I went on a liquid diet immediately following that visit and this past weekend I ended up sick and with a bad case of diarrhea. I didn't feel like going to work yesterday, and almost called out. I am being allowed off for two weeks ONLY to have this surgery because I have not been at my company long enough to qualify for FMLA. If I have complications and have to stay off longer than two weeks I would (not could) lose my job.
