Absorption/Confusion/and stupidity?

Okay here's my rant. I have an issue with all our docs flaming at the hair telling us that if we don't take all our 97 vitamins every single day we won't absorb things correctly. Okay, I can get that, sure. But if that's true, then WHY DON'T WE MALABSORB ANY OTHER MEDICATION? I was told that the only things malabsorbed are the vitamins/calcium etc. But when I called my doc asking if pain meds were malabsorbed, because I thought they were because apparently everything else is, they were like 'no, other rmeds are fine.'

So needless to say I'm pretty wary about all this ONLY VITAMINS ARE MALABSORBED OH MY GOD **** I think if they are malabsorbed and food is malabsorbed then other meds are malabsorbed as well, or NOTHING is malabsorbed. End rant I suppose.

Any thoughts?

I never heard only vitamins were malabsorbed. It was anything timed release that would not be absorbed fully into our system. One reason why depression meds have to be adjusted is the timed release tend not to be as effective

Doesn't make any sense. I see malabsorbed oil and food all the time. Meds should be the same.

I'm poppin Walgreen bariatric multis all day long.

From my profile...I asked this 2 1/2 years ago...
Who is the best person to tell me which drugs are absorbed in the stomach and which elsewhere?
I never got a straight answer.  I've asked doctors and pharmicist to no end.  I nibble on my vitamins throughout the day.  I nibble on a B-complex.  I do it just to make sure the absorption is occuring.  I take my multi in the morning and afternoon, same with my calcium.  Just don't know, so I spread them out.  All labs seem to be ok...but??

I agree with snickelfritz.  I cannot take extended release antidepressants.  I take Depakote for manic depression and it is taken in a split dosage, i.e., 500mg in the morning and 1500mg in the evening.  I know that some of you may have read about Depakote in the past week since it was originally used only to control seizures.  But, it is also used now in the treatment of manic-depression.

One more thing, if you are an RNY patient you are not permitted to have most OTC pain relief meds other than Tylenol.  Please be aware of the limit of Tylenol pills you can take so you don't get Tylenol poisoning.

Any meds that are timed release will not be absorbed into the system.  You can put alcohol if you drink into that category also.  We just need the regular meds not the extended release etc.
