Overcoming compulsive eating

I had posted about this last week and mentioned I'm trying to work on a stragey to overcome my compulsive eating and food addiction.  I'm 3 years post-op and have had RNY surgery.  I went to post here and on the Main Forum about a different book that I am using.  This book uses Cognitive Therapy and provides a 6 week course with tasks to be done each day.  For some reason my posts to both forums were either not posted or were pulled.  The book is the Beck Diet Solution but it is not a diet book.  You can buy it in Hardcover, workbook, or 4 CDs.  If you can only afford one, I'd suggest you get the workbook.  I got all of them.  Bob

I got a reply on the Main Forum from Nicole L.  She said she's the therapist *****commended the Beck Diet Solution.  She stressed that you can work from either the hardcover or the workbook and that you only need one of the two.  She said it doesn't matter which one you use.  As a therapist, she has conducted group sessions using the Beck Diet Solution.

That's good. Don't want to spend TOO much money. Looking forward to getting it.

I just ordered it as well. I'm big time compulsive and if I don't do something about it, I'l going to be right back where I started from. As it is, I haven't lost a single pound in a month. My rationalizing side tells me "well at least you didn't gain." I know this is total BS and that kind of thinking is going to end with me being fat again. At just 4 month post op, I should still be loosing big time!

I have been much better this past week. Been making sure I get my protein in daily, my water intake and I've been working out again.

I really hope this book can help me because when I do screw up with food I quickly develop a f*ck it attitude and then things really get crazy for me.

Thanks for posting about this book.. I'm really looking forward to working through it.

sjbob,

Thanks for the heads up I just order this work book for my wife and my self. I am looking forward to getting it as she has gone back to her old ways since her surgery in july and has really slowed her wieght loss.  And of course this makes it harder for me. We both have realized we have problems with food and we both want to be successful on our wieght loss surgery. Keep up your good work and you are correct this board is important as I have continued to follow and be active and she has stopped using this source of info and that is when she started heading back into her bad habits. Good luck and thank you for passing on this valuable information.

This is a 6 week course where you do successive tasks on each of the 42 days.  Although it can help all of us, it will be especially helpful for people who are regressing in their eating habits.  It reinforces good eating habits and strategies.  Some of us learned them and stopped using some of them with time.  Some other tasks are different or new and may help us.

I do emphasize that we should use the diet provided by our WLS professionals.  Since the book is for the general public and can be used with any diet, one item she mentions should not make us reject the whole book.  That comment is to sip water while eating.  Most people who follow the pouch rules cannot do this.  If that's the case, then follow her advice but just don't drink sips of water while eating.

The book does include many strategies that we've learned in the past and should continure to use such as planning meals, measuring our food intake, recording our food intake and journaling.  Of course, it explains cognitive therapy.  And, as we learn about how cognitive therapy can help us stay on our post-op diet, it may pique our interest in cognitive therapy.  Dr. Aaron Beck, the author's father, founded Cognitive Therapy  and has many books out on the subject.
