Need advice
I would use the temp agencies but be very careful to get a reputable one. There are some that if you won't take a 6.00 dollar an hour job they won't hire you. Set a limit as to how low you will go. Remember not to sell your self short. You have a great skillset and a good attitude.
I also would NOT mention the WLS except maybe to say you were dieting or following a food plan. COuld scare off HR people because of medical issues.

I've been on disability since July, 1992 and I don't think I'll ever work again. But, my wife just lost her job on 12-31-08. So, we're paying attention to the news and she's devising strategies while honing her resume--she's getting severence now and will soon be on unemployment. She said that she'll start working on more research out of our local library. That may be a good place for you to start since you can probably network with people you meet there as well as with other people you may know in your industry.
After watching a few of the job fairs on Good Morning America, I can say that they strongly urge people to get together and help each other find jobs. Considering your weight loss, I suggest that you see if there are any jobs available with any bariatric centers or bariatric surgical offices in your area. I keep hearing on the news that the only field that seems to be immune from the current crisis is the medical field. They may be able to appreciate your weight loss and have it work for you. Even if you get a minor position while you develop your tech skills, it may be worth it.
I was wondering if you are getting Social Security Disabliity. If you are, check with them about their rules for a trial wok period. I used to work for them about 23 years ago and my last job had similar rules about disability and returning to work. I just don't know how the laws have changed since I left. You may have benefits suspended and lose Medicare. Granted, if you are able to work and have medical, you'd be better off doing so.

Dave,
A good way to start networking is a website called linkedin. It is like a facebook/myspace site for professionals. It is a way to re-connect with past connections from school and jobs. It is a tough time to be looking for work I have been out since November, Had a few interviews no offers. Dont let this search get you down. Right now your job is to find a job. Spendc20-30 hours a week networking and looking for work. If you can afford it check out a copy called Lee Hect and Harrision they help develope resumes and hone your job search skills, I don know what they charge it was part of my severance package. Remember 70% of jobs are filled because of networking only 30% are filled through job boards or posting. So it is who you know in most cases that gets you the job.
good luck keep us informed.

I know your pain. However, I'am self employed in my 40th year of that experience. Good times and bad. You may want to find a work from home job Google them Busting your hump beating the pavement to fill employment gaps is very depressing and will not solve your problem. Get phone service, stuffing and posting or computer job at home. Set up a schedule work it like a regular job.
And then decide WANT YOU WANT to do and put the energy, passion and effort into that.
And then decide WANT YOU WANT to do and put the energy, passion and effort into that.
You do have two things running against you.
One the job market which if the States are anything like Canada is almost non-existant. And Two the Gap in your work history.
While the first is harder to solve I believe that I may have a possible solution for you for the secound.
Volunteer Work. It looks good on a resumee, and shows that you do not want to sit around at home. It may give you a chance to practice your skills in a work environment (which I know is highly unlikely in your particular field) and at the minimum would be good for your self-esteem which by the sounds of your post you seem to be having a problem with as your can not find a job right now.
