VSG and guys
I'm at a crossroads now, not sure which way to go. He informed me the VSG definitely is not a safer operation than the RNY - neither are "safe" considering your stomach gets opened/cut on both. I thought maybe the VSG was a lower risk surgery.
Good luck with your VSG. I was completely sold on it myself over the past 10-12 months, but after my consult today, I'm starting to swing back to the RNY.

I dont want to sway you in any way BUT - i did a lot of research involving a couple of surgerons that i implicidli trust - family related. While no surgery is really safe, VSG is by far simpler and "safer" procedure. RNY is used the most and the results are documentd the most weigh loss over time.
However there are too many possible complications over time, malabsorpsion, etc.
My choice is VSG restrictive and Gherlin removal should be enough
Bottom line is this is just a tool not a silver bullet-you will get out most from it as you change eating habitst etc.
Good luck

I live in FL and I am getting the VSG. I am going to Dr. Wiljon Beltre in Altamont Springs. He does RNY, Band and VSG. VSG can be done inside 2 hours where RNY is 6 from what i've read. Least your stomach still functions as it should, its just smaller and there is no bypass
I don't have an issue with sweets so rny not best fit for me, i dont want to worry about barfing up food and vitamin issues.
If you look at all the people here on OH, you will find success and failure for each type of surgery. There is no perfect surgery, the secret is finding the surgery that is the best fit for you and which you feel will give you the best results in the long run.

Dave don't know who your DR is BUT I will bet hes NOT a VSG Dr by that I mean he doesn't do them unles forced to. I woould bet he does all RNY adn lapband because its easier to get approved adn he comfortable with it.
Hes dead wrong about the VSG not being safer than the RNY, lets use some logic here. With the VSG you lose the curvature of your stomach, noting else is touched, you keep your stoma and pyloric valve and no rerouting of your intestines.
With the RNY they remove everything adn remake a stomach with the fundus of your old stomach the puch, with a hole punch type of device, a new stoma and you have no pyloric valve. then they reroute your intestines more cutting and more stiches in two additional palce top and bottom of intestines. How can that eb just as safe as the VSG >
botha re good options and will work for you as long as you work your tool. But your Dr is a quack, IMO. Find a local doctor that offers all 4 options and talk to them.
You are right, he's not a "VSG Dr", but he's been doing WLS for quite a while, and I know myself, I LOVE sweets, ice cream, candy, sugar in general. I know the VSG will work for awhile on me, but I know myself, and my lack of will power, so I feel I need a more aggressive approach. I'm not thrilled with the fact of having surgery at all in general. Anytime they cut your stomach open and sew it back, you have a chance for leaking and septic shock and dying, so VSG, RNY or DS all run these risks.
I've talked with other Dr's, and they do leave the choice up to me, because only I know my body the best, and know my brain the best.
I'll keep my profile more up-to-date as I progress and look forward to being on the "losers bench"!
