The question you should be asking is how long will you keep it off. The reality is with any restriction only surgery the regain weight is extremely high. While the VSG has not been around long enough for there to be long term studies, other restriction only surgeries have been around for a long time, and their regain rate is somewhere in the 70 percentile. Granted the VSG removes much of the fundus (sp?) which supposedly reduces your hunger levels. But in reality, many people with VSGs get hungry. I have the DS, which has the VSG plus malabsorbtion, and from what I've gathered from my experience and those who've had the DS, hunger isn't based on hormones, good or bad, it's fact. So sometimes you eat because your hungry sometimes you don't.
Will you be able to maintain a major weight loss with the VSG? The answer can probably be seen in your diet history, if you were able to diet and keep it off for a long time, then yes, you'd probably do very well long term with the VSG, but then if you were able to do that, would you need WLS?
On the otherhand the VSG is being touted as the "next" big WLS, but only time will tell if works.

If this is the surgery I am thinking of, it will work well...if done right. We had my surgeon come to the local support group on Monday. I asked him which surgeries are coming down the road we may see. He talked about this one and was saying it is very effective. He says the biggest problem is that people will get the first part done (which their insurance will cover)...and not come back for part 2 (which most insurances won't cover). He was saying from this surgery most people get the second surgery...going with a DS. But with this one the surgeon can go in several directions depending on each patient's needs...whatever seems best with the doctor and patient. I see the good and the bad with this surgery. The one thing that scares me is staph infections. If you develop one, it may be awhile (or never) before you can get the second surgery. Personally I would just go for a RNY or DS...get it over and done with...Both are proven surgeries with great track records. Both have their issues...but only minor ones. Brian
so far so good. I am down well over 100 in 9 months, not counting pre-op loss. and while the looses have slowed a bit I am still going down.
"THEY" say you should be able to lose about 75 of your EW but many have lost more. With all WLSs it depends on how well you work your tool. They can all fail or succeed its up to you
