pouch capacity

Hey guys,  I'm a 1 -1/2 weeks out form RNY surgery and am on  a full liquid diet.  It feels like I can take in more than I am supposed to. Is it because I am drinking rather than eating solid foods?  Once I  start eating solids will I feel full faster?  For example, as of now I can easily eat 1 cup of purred soup and not really feel full.  I ask my NUT and she said to let my pouch tell me when I feel full.  I just don't want to screw this up.

 Hey newman:

I am 4 weeks out......

You will be able to take in more liquids than food. Liquids don't stay long in the stomach.

Once you start eating food it is a little difficult to tell when your full for the first few weeks but if you over do it, you will certaintly know.

All of it takes time to re-learn how our body tells us we are full/satisfied.

Be sure to eat slow and chew.

Hey newman,

Liquids are going to sllliidde right on through once you get past the "oh my gosh I'm gonna throw up" stage that most have in the first couple of days post surgery.  One you start to introduce semi-solid and finally solid foods you will see a big difference.  Even today, at over a year out, I have certain foods that do NOT fill me up.  Those are the ones to be careful of.  My doc tells me to eat foods that "remind" me that I am a post WLS'er.  Such as meat, protien, and complex carbs (think oatmeal) within reason.

How much longer do you have to be on full liquids?  Should be more than just a couple of more days right?  Maybe you could try something with a little bit more texture, like smooth mashed potatoes.  That was my first "semi-solid" meal, and they were the best darn potatoes I've ever eaten.

Good luck to you!

Newman:  Asked the same question.  I was afraid my pouch was too big too because I wasn't getting full.  But it helped once the liquid stage was over and started on mushies.  I want to emphasize what Jay said though.  He wrote how you don't feel full right away during the first few weeks.  I was confused on the mushies too because I wouldn't get the "full" feeling right away.  Luckily my wife took stuff away from me!  When I ate my first scrambled egg, I was eating VERY slowly, and about 1/2 to 3/4 through the one egg, she took it away from me!  Then about 10 minutes later or so, I felt so full.  Was glad she did it then.  Was confused why I wasn't feeling full immediately.  Was told it would come, and it did.  Just be VERY careful when you start.  Eat very very slowly, and stop after a small bit.  After 10 to 15 minutes, you should have the full feeling.  If not, eat just a little more.  It takes time to get used to the new stomach and how little it will hold.  Good luck, Michael

When I went to the cream soups I could feel it going glug...glug...glug  out of the pouch and down. The solid food stays in there and I feel up quick.
Today I am trying snails.
