Breakfast post WLS...Rethinking it...

Thought I would start this thread concerning breakfast.  Pre Op we get into a pattern of what we should have for breakfast.  Things like; cereal, oatmeal, bacon, fried eggs, hashbrowns, and coffee get thrown out the window for the first few months post WLS.  We really have to change our eating habits...esp for breakfast.  Lunch looks a little more normal for most.

When I was early post op I was reaching for things like tuna salad, Wendy's Chili, cooked spinach, or a protein shake.  I'm just thinking that breakfast was one of the biggest eating changes we have to make early on in our post WLS journey.  Your thoughts?  Brian

I agree Brian. Pre-op, I never ate breakfast. If I did, it was just because I was already binging early in the day and I would stop a one or two fast food places and get various items and scarf it down on my way to work. Now, I have a meal replacement protein shake every morning. I am going to try changing it up a bit, but for now, I need to stick with it, because believe it or not, it gets me focused early in the day so I won't be so tempted to overeat the rest of the day.

Hey Trent - What are some of your favorite protein bars?  I've been eating the South Beach bars with 19g of protein and 210 calories.  Chocolate and peanut butter is probably the best flavor.  Know of anything else I should try?

Hey Dragon,

My nutritionists have said to stay under 10 grams of sugar and/or sugar alcohols and the amount of protein has to be at least twice the amount of sugar in the bar for it to be a protein supplement. It is hard to find a bar that tastes good that is under 10 grams of sugar.

My absolute favorite bars are both Atkins Advantage. I love the Chocolate Chip Granola and the Peanut Butter Granola. They have the Chocolate Chip Crisp too, which is good, but it doesn't compare to the granola. These are the ones that I could eat like a candy bar, but of course, I have to limit myself. They are getting harder to find. I'm going to have to find an Atkins store and go stock up. If you find these, you MUST try them. You'll be glad you did.

I'll check out the South Beach bars. I'm always looking for something new.

Trent

Breakfast is difficult for me on weekdays.  I just am not ready to eat before I go to the gym and work.  Once I am at work, I just don't have time for a traditional breakfast.   I also tend to have a protein shake or a protein bar as my breakfast.  I find that these are really the only low carb, high protein, low fat that are easy to grab quickly (The work of picking a good choice is already done).

On the weekend I love breakfast.  Often it will be eggs with some sort of lean meat to increase the protein.  I really find that getting a good dose of protein in the morning does start the day on the right foot and makes it easier to make better choices throughout the day.

eu rah x 10.  The great american breakfast was in part one of my troubles. Always thought I had to egg and meat up for the day.  I am a desk pear. I'am not cutting timber and bailing hay on the back 40.  Protein shake and some fruit are todays fare
Those days of Dennys, Mikd's, all u can eat brunches, and making bacon, pototoes, eggs, waffles on Sunday for the family are days gone by for me.  and besides, my wife did'nt like putting on her face early on weekends for an early brunch.
I blame it on advertising, farm upbringing an anything else I can use.
Keep on looking for the RIGHT FOODS

I eat 3 turkey bacons and a bowl of oatmeal or half a bagel with cream cheese every weekday. Then about an hour or so later I'll eat an orange or some other fruit. On the weekends I might make pancakes and eggs. I'll probably only eat 1 pancake and 1 egg scrambled with a couple turkey bacons.

Good thread Brian.  I was never a regular breakfast eater but would occasionally grab a biscuit or some other high fat garbage on the way to work.  Now days it's a protein bar almost every morning.

I eat organic peanut butter on whole wheat toast almost every morning.  It gives me a protien boost and also keeps me "full" until lunch.
