Hey bullyanky,

I have tried many many protein bars. The ones I like best are the Atkins Advantage Peanut Butter Granola and the Chocolate Chip Granola. They are freaking awesome!!!!

The peanut recall really did a number on a lot of the protein bar companies.  My favorite is Rockin Roll Bar (whey protein...soy protein...and peanuts).  I can only eat about 1/5 at a time.  Don't have any now (recalled), but will try and get some later if the company is still in business (Vitamin Shoppe).  I heard one large protein bar company (Detour) went bankrupt and may have to go out of business because of the peanut butter recall.  Brian

Forward Foods LLC, the maker of Detour brand energy bars, sought bankruptcy protection after recalling some of its products that used Peanut Corp. of America’s allegedly tainted peanuts.

The company, based in Minden, Nevada, listed assets of $21.3 million and debt of $25.4 million in Chapter 11 documents filed today in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del.

Forward Foods said Jan 30 it would recall its Detour brand energy bars containing roasted peanuts purchased from the Peanut Corp. of America, according to a statement. Sales of Detour products that contained peanuts from Peanut Corp. of America accounted for about 75 percent of the company’s protein-bar sales, according to court papers.

“A significant value of inventory must be condemned" because of the recall and the company’s ability to collect money owed it for affected products is “very much at risk," Forward Foods Chief Executive Officer J. Patrick Muldoon said in court filings.

I've tried a number of protein bars and my favorite so far are the South Beach meal replacement bars.  They have 19g of protein and 210 calories, which is close to the 10% protein to calorie ratio I try to use.  They also make smaller bars that have around 10g of protein and 110 calories.  The best flavors are either peanut butter or peanut butter and chocolate.  The other flavors are a little to sweet for my taste.

I still use them quite often, especially after the gym. If you can find them, (if not, look online) look for Doctors CarbRite Diet bars. They taste really good and have an excellent calories to protein ratio. The one I am looking at is 195 calories and has 20.5 g of protein. This falls well into the old Boner 10% rule.

I liked the Advantage bars also, but considering my food addictions, they soon seemed to be like candy to me.  I stopped using them for that reason.  Having one during the day is fine for most people, but, like candy and other junk foods, I couldn't eat just one.  My "healthy" protein habit was also becoming a bit expensive.

To save money, I switched to protein powders.  I think the Syntrax products: Matrix, Nectars, and Essence taste the best and can be mixed without a blender.  EAS makes the same claim as far as the mixing goes but doesn't taste quite as good.  I get vanilla and mix it with SF & FF syrups from DaVinciGourmet but I know others use Torani syrups.  EAS is super cheap at Sam's club at about $27.99 per 5 lb resealable bag.

Kashi makes some great bars.  They use all natural sugars that we can digest so you don't have to worry about the sugar or dumping.  Their TLC bars have 4g fiber, 6g protien and 180 calories.  The bars are light and crunchy rather than the heavy moist protien bars.  I keep them in my truck so I have a meal when something unexpected comes up.  At first I could only eat one of the two in the package at a time, but now I can fit both in.

You have to remember that your diet is not all about protien, it is about ballance.  The protien bars with 20g of protien don't give you the rest of the nutrican that you need.  The digestible fiber is a necessity to us.

I was initially turned onto these by GNC Nutrition guy.  Only problem is they only sold them by the case.
There are a lot of different flavors, unfortunately not all of them are available in both sizes.

Safeway sells them individually small bars are priced at 10 for $10.00 every other week or so.
Walmart also has them as the same price but you have to buy them in boxes of 6 of the same flavor.

The small bar which is what I usually eat looks like this:

Serving Size: 1 bar (50g)
Calories 200

  • Total Fat 5g 8%
  • Saturated Fat 3g 15%

  • Potassium 40mg 1%
  • Total Carbohydrate 18g 6%
  • Dietary Fiber 0g 0%
  • Sugars 3g
  • Protein 20g 40%
Their larger bar which is usually too much for me looks like this:

Serving Size: 1 Bar (78g)

Amount per Serving
  • Calories 280 Calories from Fat 60
Total Fat 7g 11%

They also make 2 different sized shakes ready to go in the can.  You can find them at Trader Joes and at the Vitamin Shop as well as FoodMaxx
