Duane:  Congratulations on your decision to save your life.  And to be sure, that is what you are doing.  It's a little late because you have already told so many people, but I kept mine quiet not so much out of fear of what people wold say but more out of not wanting to make a big deal about it.  The goal is to lose the weight, and get on with life like a regular person.  regular people don't obsess about weight and that is where I want to be.

You may be in a similar situation as me with insurance, but I actually wanted the sleeve (VSG) because I'm diabetic and that is my main reason for WLS.  I didn't want all the malabsorbtion and my intestines cut and I wasn't thrilled about having the implant of the band.  I opted for the band because Humana paid for everything.  So far so good, but I hate the port and the adjustment BS.  Have you considered the VSG procedure?  Greg

I'm a little different.  As soon as I got the insurance clearance, I wrote an article about it in my church newsletter so that all of the members of the church I pastor would know.  It helps that two of my church members have had RNY.  I also just told my Kiwanis club that if they didn't see me for a few weeks it wasn't because I wasn't interested any more - it's just that I have a couple weeks out of town on meeting days and then the surgery is on the next meeting day.

Until I got the insurance approval, I didn't want a whole lot of questions and only a select few knew.  I figured that there was no sense saying "I'm doing gastric bypass" until the insurance company gave me permission.  Since then, everyone has been very supportive.  My wife is my constant reminder that the RNY is not a guarantee, but it's a tool.

Believe it or not, I'm looking forward to starting the two-week liquid diet ... it means that I'm on the two-week countdown to new life!

Last Saturday my wife and I went to a birthday party for our nephew.  Along with us were the two biggest ney-sayers that I wrote about.  During the one and one half hour car ride we talked about the surgery that we were going to have.  I told them that we had not told any of our friends out of state because we had enough ney-sayers and negativity here.  That comment by me hit it's mark in a rather effective way.  Followed by a long silence was an abrupt change in the topic of conversation.

Don't take it personally.  So many people just have no idea about WLS.  It is almost Easter, at Easter you give people you care about Chocolate Bunnies.  For Chrismas my uncle gave us a care package that included hot chocolate (extra sugar version), maple cookies (maple flavored oreos), and several other high carb foods.  I am almost one year out can it has not gotten any better over the past year.

Pass the bunnies on to someone who would enjoy them.  If the people you work with are anything like those I work with it will be gone in a matter of minutes!  Enjoy the fact that your Aunt cared enough to think about the two of you, just a little misguided.

Hope your wife does well today (if my math works out ok)  Put up a post later and let us know how things go.

Jim

Thanks for your thoughts and advice Jim. My wife did great today. Her RNY only took one hour and fifteen minutes. They're about to get her up walking for the first time. I'll post all about it in a little while. Duane
