Hot Sauce and Spices
Hi all,
I'm 3 days from RNY (4/1) and eating and drinking this packaged stuff for the last 10 days. Already lost 15+ lbs.
To help improve the taste I've been adding hot pepper sauce to some things and garlic powder to some of the soups.
After I have the surgery, is my stomach going to be able to tolerate the hot sauce and garlic? How about any other spices? What about salt?
I should have asked my surgeon about this last week when I was there but didn't think of it then.

There is a lot of trial and error the first few months post op...what one person can handle, another may not be able to handle. I would go real real slow the first few months. Boring boring boring...Think of your pouch as a baby's stomach...what would you give them?? I would go with things like salt and pepper (small amounts), but the big time hot stuff I would wait months. Brian PS What you can't handle one time, a few weeks or months later your pouch can handle it...
I am trying to remember how long it was before I tried the hot stuff again and to be honest I don't remember. That was one of the things I wondered my self. Prior to surgery I was known to have a cast iron gut. Guys at work would bring in home made salsa or hot sauce and when I would go to try it they will always say it's not going to be hot enough for you. When I would bring it in they would only try it in small portions. I have no problems at all with hot stuff. I will say that I don't eat as much as I use to. My surgeon has his patients have an endoscopy at a year out. He found I had place in my stoma he called an irritation. To me read start of an ulcer. He put me on previcid solutab and did another one and every thing is fine now. So I still eat hot stuff but instead of every day now only once or twice a week. Like I say when people ask me what I can eat I tell them any thing I "choose", there are just some things I choose not to eat any more. All things in moderation.

Pre-op I almost wouldn't eat a meal unless a had a hot pepper or two. Wasn't a real meal unless I was sweating at the end. Post op I waited for at least 3 months to try anything. Give yourself time to heal. The new tumster can be a cranky ***** sometimes. I started with some milder hot sauce and small amounts. Seem to do ok. I still haven't gone back to hot peppers because of the seeds. At 6 months out, I want to wait a while longer just to make sure. Good luck, and congrats on your new life on 4/1. Michael
I can't remember if my Doc wanted me to abstain from spicy food for 3 or 4 months after my RNY. They just wanted my stomach to be healed before I tried spicy food. Herb and spice wise I have not really had an issue, since I have been about 3 months post op. You just have to try different foods and see how you tolerate them, a food (or spice) may not settle well one day and be fine the next (or the other way around).
Good luck

Thanks for responses guys. I guess I'm going to have to put the all the hot sauces and pepper sauces on the top shelf after tomorrow. I can agree with Arkman to some extent. Food has always had to be doused with hot sauce or ground red pepper at least 3 or 4 times a week.
Oh well, I'm going to learn how to eat all over again after Wednesday! Surgery is scheduled for 2:20pm. Looking forward to having it behind me.

I may be a little different, but the spicey stuff is what got me through the first weeks. I probably started using salsa on week two along with garlic and other things that made food more interesting. I was told that soft was the main rule along with staying away from sugar, eating protein, taking vitamins and drinking fluids. Maybe my spicy need wasn't the best choice but it got me through the tough times.
