1 month out, not sure I'm eating enough
I've seen this posted in numerous ways, but none of them really answered what I wanted to know.
I'm basically one month out and I'm down 50 lbs since surgery.
I have a bit of an appetite, but I'm not sure if it's because I'm actually hungry from not eating enough, or if it's just head hunger.
A normal day for me follows:
B - either a shake or a high protien yogurt
S - Cheese Stick or Cottage Cheese
L - 2 oz Tuna Fish
S - Cheese Stick or Cottage Cheese
D - Varies. Normally about 2 oz of something high in protien
S - Sugar Free Popsicle
During the day I get my 64 oz of water and I'm getting about 70+ grams of protien depending on what i'm eating.
I've been told several times to check out the men's forum to compare what everyone else is eating.
Sometimes it's all I can do to get the 2 oz of protien down, while other times I feel like I'm not eating enough.
I meet with the Dietician in a few weeks, but in the meantime if I'm starving myself I'd like to know.
Any suggestions for things to snack on besides cheese? Some days I could really go for something crunchy (and I don't mean chips)
Chicken and ground beef have been hard to eat... too tough and don't sit well with me. I'm heading to FL in a week and figure I'll give Salmon a whirl since I'll be doing a fair amount of eating out (I've only eaten out twice since surgery)
I can't even think about what I'm going to do for Easter lunch/dinner at my parents...
Insite? Suggestions? Pat on the back stfu you're doing fine?

Hi Tony,
First - great job on losing 50 pounds! Thats great!
From what you posted - I think you are eating about what I eat now. I eat a little larger portion, but not by much. I am 7 months out now, and at 1 month I think I was barely able to get 30-40 g of protein. The reason I struggled was because of the sheer volume of foods (that I like) required to get the protein in - were more than I could keep down. In other words, I had trouble at about a month out keeping the correct amounts of protein in versus what I could fit in my stomach. If you are able to keep on that regimen, I would think you are doing pretty well. At that point I had little interest in eating, and struggled to finish a half a cup of food at a time.
As for crunchy - I found Gensoy soy chips are 6 g of protein per serving. Low in fat and very crunchy - I like the barbeque flavor. And nuts are also a great source of protein that also satisfies my crunch. Wheat thins and bagel chips are great with my tuna for lunch. Even a handful of dry cheerios is a nice crunchy snack.
I hope that helps!

Tony, I barely even remember the early stages of being post op but I got a chuckle when you said that you sometimes have troublee with the 2 oz of protein. I assume you mean that you are stuffed by the time you get around to dinner. Everything you are eating up until then is just loaded with protein.
As far as Easter goes, I'm sure that your family wants you to succeed with your surgery results. You can surely have a small amount of your choice of protein. Since Easter is a couple weeks away, you may be able to have some lettuce with it. You can have your cheese sticks as part of your snacks throughout the day. I know I always had to make adjustments when I saw my folks. They'd have other guests and be offering the usual nuts and chips. I either didn't have anything or I just had some cheese. I can't eat nuts. Maybe you can. Make sure to get your fluids that day, but you may want to vary your timing of when you drink so you don't find yourself needing the bathroom when you are out to dinner. Most restaurants will accomadate any requests you have for your meal. Remember that you can eat 2-3 oz or your protein and bring the rest of your meal home with you. You can just ask for a box and not even have to call it a doggie bag.

Ok, I am ten days out and maybe I am just lucky but this is what i had today. The Chili I actually ate one third at lunch time and the other two thirds at supper. The cottage cheese I ate half, then waited twenty minute and finished the other half. The Isopure I use first thing in the morning to get my meds in to get a jumpstart on protein, then have to wait a half hour to do breakfast.

It is amazing how docs differ. Mine uses:
In Hospital - Clear fluids
Out of Hospital until JP drain removed - full fluids
week two through four - soft foods
A couple of days before you one month visit try some solid meats to see how they do.
Add new foods one at a time at will based on Nut. guidelines
