Five weeks post op and impatient
I was five weeks post op yesterday (Memorial Day).
I actually had five people ask me why I had my flag at half mast yesterday morning. I can't believe it!!!!
Well, I get my G-Tube removed in 6 days. It is starting to drive me nuts!!! I'm very ready to get the damn thing out and healed so I can start riding my bike and jogging and CUT MY GRASS!
My son does it right now and he can't seem to edge or trim to my satisfaction.
Also I started soft foods yesterday. Saturday I tried taking some barbcue ribs off the bone and put them in a chopper. After two small bites my pouch rejected it. I don't know if it was the meat or the spicy sauce. But, wow that was the worst feeling I've had since the operation. I was foaming and upchucking.
So I'm sticking to the list my NUT gave me.

I bet you cant wait to get that thing out.
Since my wls I have eaten some of everything I think. I thought before my surgery that there was going to be all kids of foods I could never eat again. I was wrong there still there and I can still eat them. You just cant eat them all the time or you will regain. I found that if I deprive myself I loose control after time and just hog out. So I have taken the approach of anything with moderation. Right now I'm eatting very healthy but I have a cheat meal every so often. So yea bring on the ribs....... Just not all the time!

I'm about ten days behind you, but didn't have to deal with the G-tube and have been on purees and soft foods for a couple of weeks.
I had some Wendy's chili last week and tolerated it well - it didn't seem to be too spicy at all. Today at a lunch meeting, I ordered a hot roast beef sandwich - hold the bread and the gravy - came with mashed potatoes. To be safe, I ordered cottage cheese on the side. When the plate came, it was HEAPING with roast beef, so I canceled the cottage cheese, ready to reorder if the pouch complained. The beef was quite lean and very tender with sufficient broth (I won't call it "au jus" cuz it wasn't that classy) to keep it moist, and I had no problem with the pouch. I have two more meals in the fridge right now. I guess I won't be able to eat out more than every third or fourth day or else I'll have too many leftovers to deal with!
I had to see the surgeon about an incision last week, and I asked him about activity - the one thing that I wish Cleveland Clinic had talked about a little more in the pre-op process. In essence, he said to do what I wanted within reason. So yesterday I cut the grass on my rider and I helped my wife plant garden and annuals around the house. I'm still being careful about lifting, but I'm planning to get to a fitness center this week and start using the resistance machines with minimal resistance. Official one month postop visit is next Tuesday.
My sense is that I'm running on about 80% of normal energy. I've been calculating my food intake on FitDay.com and figure that I'm eating somewhere between 600 and 650 calories a day, give or take. Haven't hit 700 yet, and one day I was closer to 500 and satisfied. I think when I can tolerate more calories, I'll get the other 20% of my energy back. But with those calories and calculated caloric expenditure of about 3400 a day, I'm on track for a loss of about 5 pounds a week, which is just about what has been happening.
Hang in there, Mike.

You combined pork fat with a lot of sugar - 2 no-nos, that's what you get. You won't be ready for something like that until about 9 mos post. We all want to experiment, buy you have to keep it to 1 new thing at a time. Please keep in mind that you only need to deprive yourself for the 1st year, you can do a year for your wife and kids can't you? Follow the NUT's diet. After 1 year most foods are ok in moderation. Gotta love the foamies.

1 Have some patience--all of this will soon seem like a distant memory.
2 Thank your son. Wow! He actually doesn't duck cutting the lawn. You'll eventually be able to do the trimming and edging. Perhaps you may make that one of your first activities and let him do the bulk of the mowing.
3 I hated the puree portion of the diet. In my memory, nothing tasted worse than pureed meat. Yuck! And, I couldn't have whey shakes. The soy shakes were not as tasty and were quite gritty. I think that's when I became fond of adding DaVinciGourmet SF&FF syrups to my shakes.
I don't like anything spicy anyway. Perhaps you can look at FoodnetworkTv and see if they have any good recipes for dishes with beans. You can get good WLS recipes at www.theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/ .

Mike,
I have been pretty lucky since my surgery. I have been able to tolerate whatever I wanted within reason. The only thing that is off my list semi-permanently is pork loin. For whatever reason, no matter how small I cut it or how much I chew it, it's a show stopper. Pulled pork seems OK as does sausage and bacon. Small price for the trade off. When I went to soft foods I found two things that kept me sane. SF Popsicles and Chicken ala King, blenderized. One for the crunch and the feeling that I was finally chewing something and the other just tasted great after the pudding, broth and Crystal Light.
Hang in there. It's amazing what a little time will do.
