I really need some help/advice---what can I do?

Hello guys.

So, I just got off the scale, and i'm frustrated with my journey once again.  I'm 2 months post op and by my home scale, i'm down only 31 pounds.  A large part of this is because I hit a stall at 3 weeks, and it lasted 3+ weeks (almost 4 weeks).  Last week it started moving again and i lost 5 pounds, then this week, i'm only down 1.

I'm trying to get 80 grams of protein a day.  Usually I do hit that and if not, i'm close to it.  I'm walking 2 miles a day 3x a week.  Maybe my calories are a little low at around 800-900 a day.  But then again, i'm only 2 months out....trying to work my way up to getting more, but it's hard when I get full so fast.

On Monday it will be 9 weeks, i'm down 31 pounds---sometimes I feel like it hasn't been worth it yet---I could have done the average 3 pounds a week w/out surgery....where is the payoff?  I assumed much later down the road it would slow down, say at 6+ months post op. But being slow this early is just so unexpected. I know everyone is different and every journey is different, but I can't seem to be satisfied with that rationale. I'm getting depressed all over again.

Are there any suggestions or advice for me?  I know there is a lot of experience on this board, so any help you can give would be great.

Patience my man, patience!

Stick to the basics, maybe up the excercise, and try not to be a "scale *****".  Meaning stay off of them except maybe once a week or only get on them at the doctors.  Judge your weight loss by how your clothes are fitting and the improvements in your health.

Never, and I mean NEVER, trust a fart!!

Hang in there man.  I don't it can be frustrating but it'll come around.  I had a major stall at one month out and didn't think it would ever end but it did.  Follow your instructions and you'll be fine.  Like the reply above said, you may want to increase the exercise some.  Good luck to you.

Are you drinking enough water?  The fluid is very important.

What is your Carb intake?  Too many carbs can slow weight loss.

How much weight did you lose prior to surgery?  If you lose a significant amount of weight prior to surgery, you don't see the rapid weightloss in the first few weeks.

Maybe try upping you activity.  I hit a point where walking every day did not cut it for me.  I try to do 4 or 5 miles three days a week on the elliptical at the gym (takes me about 40 minutes) and do resistance training twice a week and 3 miles on the elliptical.

Have you talked with your surgeon or nutritionist about your weight loss concerns.

Also try measuring your body.  chest, waist, thigh, arms etc.  I found that when I would stall, I would lose inches, almost as if I was compressing and getting ready to drop more weight,

It is easy to say but don't get frustrated.  Hang in there.  follow the rules and the weight will come off.

I'm drinking well over the 64 ounces of water a day.  I usually try to do 5-6 bottles of water a day.

I don't think carbs are my prob.  I'm eating things like egss, low fat soups w/ vegetables and baked fish/baked chicken a lot, my carb intake is not high.

I talked to my surgeon during the stall, he just told me to hang in there, that i was doing everything fine.  But that doesn't help issue of feeling like things are moving too slow.

I was doing a lot more activity than I am now, but I was concerned that maybe I was doing too much for the amount of calories being taken in, which could have forced me into starvation mode--so I cut back a little to see if that would help.  that's when I started to lose again, but now it's slowing down again.  It's like i'm going in circles.  i guess i'll up the activity again...but i just don't want to end up on a stall again.

I did lose 40 prior to surgery, so maybe that is attributing to this.  I try to weigh myself twice a week.  It's just the 1-2 pounds a week that's driving me insane this early on.

If you are only having 800-900 calories a day, you are already in starvation mode.  That's probably why you are in a stall.  Add more high protein meals.  Try to space them 2-3 hrs after full meals.  That way you can add calories as well as protein and not affect your main meals.

Thanks...i'll try to do that by adding in protein bars.

About how many calories should i be aiming for at 2 months out?  When I talked to my surgeon, he seemed to think that was fine for where I was at now....he told me just to eat 3 meals a day and stop when I'm full and don't worry about calorie count.  I thought that was kinda weird...so i kept counting anyway, LOL.  Just trying to see what works for everyone else.

I was only 30 pounds down at 2 months out.  Now at 19 mos. post op, I've lost more than half my original weight (315# to 155#).  I'm sure I stalled about every two or three weeks or so, and on a day-to-day basis, monitoring my weight loss was a lot like watching paint dry.  But as the months pass, every bit lost adds up.

Jusr remember that this isn't a race and you'll be hitting stalls like this over and over and over again.  If you're following the rules already, there really isn't all that much you can do to speed things along.  Just be assured that it WILL come off.

Of course, I didn't believe this either when I was 9 weeks post-op and frustrated as hell at my progress!

Good luck,

/Steve
