Making a committment to abstinence

I realize that I liked being abstinate from addictive foods for 4.5 months earlier this year.  I want that freedom again.  I'm going to use all the tools available to me to get abstinate.  I will use the books I used earlier in the year which are the Beck's Diet Solution and Food Addiction-- the Body Knows.

But, I realize that I can't do this alone.  I need the support of this group.  More importantly, I have to pray and be willing to have my God guide me.  I was in OA for 20 years and gained 300 lbs but had mental problems that were not being treated.  I am willing to use the OA big red book called Compulsive Overeater by Bill B to help me.

I don't know if I can be a 12 stepper, but just starting out with the first 3 steps is a good place to start.  Way back when, I was a sponsor in OA and was even a step sponsor but I barely recall that and it seems like ancient history.

So, I'm starting out a day at a time.  I know in the beginning it may be just an hour at a time.  When I get tempted, I can use Dr Beck's techniques as well as pray and use the other resources available to me.

I know that by doing this I will lose weight.  But, weight loss is not my primary concern.  Other people who do not understand the problem may see that as the problem, but I know that breaking the cycle of food addiction is really important to me.  I know that I may slip, but my past history shows me that I may slip for a long time before I am able to become abstinent again.  Therefore, I have to use that fear of not being able to quickly regain abstinence as encouragement to endure and resist temptaion.  Food addiction is a progressive disease.  The only solution is to not eat addictive food.  Bob

I don't know much about OA, but it sounds like you are making some excellent first steps.  God's blessings to you on this part of your journey; may it be more successful than you can possibly imagine.
