The truth about my malabsorption is sinking in.....
That's great perspective! And it's great you have such an awesome attitude about it.
When I read my surgery report I sort had a freaky/weird feeling - like....they were talking about ME and I don't remember it! All the cutting and manuevering and slicing and dicing....that was me - my body. Sorta' surreal.

Gosh Kerry, I've never had a man ask me about my intestines before, blushing furiously! lol
I pulled my surgery report out thinking I could just scan it and tell you, but man this thing is long and seems to be in some other language....which is odd, cause my doc is English too???
I see where I have a 100 cm common chanel.......oh, ok, here is some stuff, I'll just copy it so I make sure I say it all the right way..........39 Fringe or 13 mm......I'm assuming that is stomache size, Doc told me 4-6 ounces. ....The small bowel was then measured, starting at the ileocecal valve and measuring with a 10 cm ruler under moderate stretch using two laparoscopic special padded Bab**** graspers.
At 100 cm from the ilececal valve, clips were placed on either side of the ileal mesentery and then the bowel was followed for another 200 cm and two clips were placed on each side of the small bowel mesentery at 300 cm point.
We then continued to measure the bowel back to the ligament of Treitz, finding a bowel length of 720 cm.
At the 300 cm mark, the bowel was divided with the Echelon white stapler and the bowel mesentery was then divided using the Ace harmonic Scalpel. .....then it goes on to talk about the 100 cm common channel. Does this tell you the answers, cause frankly, it was pretty over my head!!

Well to tell the truth, you're the first woman I've ever asked such a think about; pretty "special" huh?
Hmm, sounds like you have a 200 cm alimentary limb, 100 cm common channel and a 420 cm biliary limb. Which is pretty close to what I have; except that my common channel is 125 cm which makes my alimentary limb 175 cm and biliary limb of 430 cm.
However, from what I've learned, some surgeons stretch the small intestine when they measure it and some don't, yours stretched your small bowel, but I have no idea if mine was stretched or not. My surgical report doesn't say how it was measured, just what the measurements were.

.....I don't really know what all that means...but I do know I am ten pounds from goal! So what ever it is, it works! Love it.
Yup, what's not to like about that!
What those numbers mean is that the food you eat is now only traveling through 41.6% of your small intestine, the other 59.4% are just cheering from the sidelines. The only thing traveling through your biliary limb is the bile your liver is producing; it's just acting as the plumbing to get it to your common channel.
Of the 41.6% that is seeing the food you eat, only 13.8% has the benefit of your bile to help in the digestion and absorption the other 27.8% that's seeing the food can only absorb some of the nutrition because there's no bile mixed in with it.
So what it all means is that you can and should eat a lot to get the nutrition you need to fuel your body and that you really need to watch your labs and make sure you're not getting deficient in any of the markers so you will stay feeling great!
