NIPHS Hypoglycemia
At my one year follow-up I was diagnosed with Non-insulinoma Pancreatagenous Hypoglycemic Syndrome.
Doc says very rare and only identified a few years ago. They figured out that part of intestine bypassed actually part of endocrine system that tells pancreas to stop producing insulin. For a few months I have noticed a shaky weird feeling. It hit rock bottom the day after Christmas when I was sweaty and shaky with a feeling of anxiety. I checked my blood with my wifes glucometer and was shocked to see 41. Since then I have tried to pinpoint what foods set it off. Until now it was cereal. Tonight I had some popcorn and pretzels and am feeling it again. Blood was 56.
I am curious if anyone else out there has experienced it.

Happens to me about two to three times per month and usually late at night. It almost always occurs after I consume a carb heavy dinner with a carb heavy late night snack (cheat). When I get the shakes, I usually drink six ounces regular soda ( I know - no lectures) with two ounces of cheese. The soda give me the quick hit and the cheese gives me proteinand fat for long term stabilization. I have used this for several years long before I had a RNY whenever I had a hypoglycemic incident becasue this usually only topped me out about 140 and then quckly settled bacj down. When I use to use more traditional carbs to counteract this problem I would end up eating more than i needed before I felt better and my blood sugar would go into the 200's.
Although the men's forum is probably not the most appropriate place for me to comment, I too have difficulty with cereal 5 years post-op. And not just sugary cereals though those do cause issues but usually high fiber cereals-like shredded wheat. Oatmeal also gets me, no matter how much protein powder I put in.
Its crazy really what will set me off. My blood sugar got as low as 27 one time in the MD's office. They didn't get the results right away and called me later concerned. Just try to avoid what sets you off but before you know it, something new will as well.

Take care,
