Protein Ice Cream

Hi Pat -

I love me some protein ice cream!  Yummm!!!

I make 1 or 2 big batches each week and package them into individual serving bowls and stash them in the freezer.  Then each morning I grab a bowl on the way to work for my pre-breakfast protein.  Right now I'm working on a batch of lemon sherbert ice cream.  Last week I had Root Beer Float ice cream. A couple weeks ago I got a great deal on fresh raspberries at Kroger so I made some ice cream with 'em. I think my next batch is going to be an orange creamsicle, we'll see.  I love this stuff!

I have been using soy milk, but thinking about switching to normal milk since it doesn't bother me and it's cheaper.  Just gotta make sure I use 2% instead of skim.  The evaporated milk sounds like a good idea too... but when I make a batch, I use 3 cups of milk, so the cans might be a bit pricey in the end.

For anyone interested... here's the link to Eggface's protein ice cream summary page... lots of links to her recipes. http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2008/08/prote in-ice-cream.html

I just go to Lori's Lick em up in Harrison Township, and they have a fat free, sugar free soft serve cone that is 85 calories, and it is wonderful.  All this sounds like too much work for a bowl of ice cream.

I would do that, too, if someplace close to me had ff/sf ice cream.  But the 75 mile drive, one way, would be cost prohibitive.  LOL!
Blue Bunny does have some good s/f ice creams.  But I enjoy making it at home and trying the different flavors.  Plus, I'm allergic to milk, so by making it myself, I can use soy milk.  I haven't made any for myself, with soy, yet.  Maybe this weekend!  Tina

Yeah, but ff/sf ice cream isn't technically nutritious.  The protein ice cream gets your protein in.  The bowl I had this morning was 145 calories, 3g carbs, 28g protein.  Basically a protein shake that's been made into ice cream.

OK... I have to admit this thread caught my eye... I have not read the whole thread... but was curious.... I too take thyroid meds and to soy protein... I was never aware that this was not a good combo.... Please let me know what info you have on this... I am not on a very high dose of thyroid meds, but I do still take them....

Thanks so much for your post and your help....

I mainly post on the Over Fifty Forum and we have a lady who had RNY eight yrs ago and is a certified OH leader....she is up-to-the minute on all nutrition and other information.....she posted an article on thyroid and soy products that indicated you should not ingest soy products if you are taking thyroid meds because the soy prohibits
your med was being effective. I was blown away.....no one ever told me and I've been taking thyroid for 50 yrs. I am currently on synthroid .10 dosage....very low amount.
I don't have the energy with the synthroid that I did when I was taking regular thyroid....however, you cannot get the regular thyroid anymore....they don't make it, so my PCP put me on the synthroid and even tho' my blood work came back normal, and he says I don't need a higher dosage, I haven't lost wt like I did on the other. Go figure?

I enjoy making the protein ice cream, as I am definitely
an ice cream lover.....this is virtually sugar free, fat free,
and delicious. Made with evaporated fat free milk it's
about 120 calories for 1/2 cup.

Hope this answers your questions. If you want to read
the article, go to the Over Fifty forum.....it was posted a couple days ago.

Well girls.....it's not the machine.  I made my son some "regular" ice cream last night.  I'm not going to tell you the details because I was dumping just touching what I put in it LOL  But it DID work and turned out perfectly.

So as soon as I get some decent protein powder I'll whip up a new batch  with either the evaporated or 2% milk.

As for why we do it.......the s/f or f/f stuff you get at the store is pretty much garbage.  It won't make you dump, but it's just a bunch of sugar alcohol and chemicals. It's nice as a treat once in a while, but not every day.   If you can make it at home, and it's yummy and had has some fresh fruit AND protein in it........I'll take that any day over a yucky bar or shake.

I was JUST sitting here wondering how your ice cream turned out!  I made REAL ice cream the first time.  WOW...so much sugar!  I did have a bite tho and it was pretty darn good.  Now, I need to try the protein ice cream!
